Carol Ann Root, 88, of Canyon, passed away on Sunday, December 22, 2024. Graveside services will be at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, December 28, 2024 at Dreamland Cemetery. Memorial services will follow at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church of Canyon with Rev. Don Stribling officiating.
Ann was born on January 20, 1936 in Canyon to A.B. and Ida Faye (Smith) Holt. She grew up in Canyon and graduated from Canyon High School in 1954. She then received her Master of Education from West Texas State College (now West Texas A&M University) and taught elementary music for over 40 years in Canyon ISD and Bushland ISD. She also played the organ for many years at the First Baptist Church of Canyon, starting at the age of 14, and then played for many years at the First Presbyterian Church of Canyon, where she was Organist Emeritus.
Ann was blessed with a natural musical talent and her life's passion was music. She dearly loved passing her gift on to other people, particularly to the numerous students that she taught piano and organ to over the years.
Ann married Norris Root on April 2, 1977 at the Joseph A. Hill Memorial Chapel on the WT Campus. They were married for 44 years before he preceded her in death on July 20, 2021.
Ann is also preceded in death by a sister, Georgia Blackwell.
Survivors include five children, Tom Dawdy of Amarillo, Stephanie Dawdy Hager and husband, Ronnie of Canyon, Cindy Getschow and husband, George of Flower Mound, Greg Root and wife, Candy of Amarillo, and Holly Schreur and husband, Mike of Canyon; nine grandchildren, Brandi Crofford of Hamilton, Ohio, Ginger Russ and husband, Bart of Flower Mound, Garrett Getschow and wife, Rose of Newport News, VA, Richard Root of Boynton Beach, FL, Berry Root and wife, Heather of Amarillo, Alexis Ellis-Root of Dallas, Parker Ellis-Root of Amarillo, Melissa French and husband, Kip of Amarillo, and Joshua Schreur of Amarillo; nine great-grandchildren, Victoria Ambriz of Dallas, Cody Crofford of Dallas, Kenny Crofford of Hamilton, Ohio, Jackson and Samuel Root of Amarillo, Brooke, Kali and Austin French of Amarillo, and Violet Getschow of Newport News, VA; and one sister, Virginia Cotton of Canyon.
