Canyon

Billy Wayne Jones, 95, of Canyon, passed away peacefully in his home on Monday, June 22, 2026. Services will be at 10:00 A.M. on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at Brooks Chapel in Canyon with Dr. Steve Olsen, pastor of First Baptist Church of Canyon, officiating. Burial will follow at Dreamland Cemetery.

Billy was born on August 30, 1930, in Quanah, Texas to Garnet Wayne and Vera Ida (Johnston) Jones. He was a 1947 graduate of Crosbyton High School and attended Wayland Baptist University. While at Wayland, he joined the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict and served until 1954. On December 16, 1951, he married Twyla Joy Hefley, and the couple moved to Biggs Air Force Base in El Paso where they enjoyed military life. They later returned to the family farm in the Big Four Community, north of Crosbyton where Billy continued farming. In 1972, they moved to Canyon and purchased the Buffalo Book Store in 1977, which they owned and operated until 2007. During that time, Billy also worked as a rural route carrier for the Canyon Post Office. He always kept a large tub of bubble gum on hand for the children who came out to collect the mail. He returned often to Crosbyton to work the farm, as well.

Billy and Twyla loved treasure hunting and pulled their camper to Arizona twice a year, where they enjoyed meeting fellow treasure hunters. He deeply loved his family, especially his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-granddaughter. He was also a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Canyon.

Billy is preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Twyla and two sons-in-law, Tommy Allen and Tony Crapanzano.

Survivors include his three children, Bobby Jones and wife, Peggy, of Wray, CO, Suzanne Allen of Canyon, and Sherry Crapanzano of Canyon; eight grandchildren, Elizabeth McCandles, Jennifer Jones, Courtney Plotts, Katie Jones, Amiee Hart, Cassandra Foster, Matt Jones, and Brandon Allen; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great, great-granddaughter.

The family suggests memorials to Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch, PO Box 1890, Amarillo, TX 79174.
