Billy D. Chumbley

February 17, 1936 — January 18, 2025

Billy D. Chumbley, 88, of Canyon, passed away on Saturday, January 18, 2025. Private family services will be held.

Billy was born on February 17, 1936 in Canadian to William and Doris (Flowers) Chumbley. He was a graduate of Canadian High School and attended West Texas State College (now WTAMU) where he was a dedicated supporter of the volleyball and basketball Lady Buff games. He was also a member of the 'Chain Gang' for WT football, moving line markers, from 1969 to 1991.

Billy married Mary Baughman on July 20, 1962 in Canadian and they were married for almost 59 years before she preceded him in death on January 16, 2021. They moved to Canyon in 1968 where he began his career with Pioneer Gas. He continued with them when it became Energas and then Atmos Energy, retiring after 34 years.

Billy was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of the Canyon City Masonic Lodge #730 where he served as past Grand Master and initiated the scholarship fund for students in Randall County. He loved woodworking in his shop and built the two homes his family lived in. He also enjoyed golfing (especially collecting the golf balls he found) and was known to highly dislike technology. His family fondly remembers his willingness to shoot hoops or play catch upon request even after a long day's work, and pickup games in the driveway were legendary. His life was all about the kids and he was profoundly proud of his grandchildren, sharing everything about them with anyone willing to listen.

Billy is preceded in death by his parents, two granddaughters, Brittaney Mary Watkins and Sarah Celeste Appling, brother and sister-in-law, Tommy and Ritabeth Chumbley, sister and brother-in-law, Loetta and Jim Ortega, and two nieces, Deena and Kayley.

Survivors include his daughter, Leslie DeAnn Appling and husband, Roy of Hereford; his son, Gary DeWayne Chumbley and wife, Sheila of Spokane, WA; three grandchildren, Chandler and Garrett Chumbley and Jaylee Appling; and great granddaughter, Ryleigh.

The family suggests memorials be to the Masonic Scholarship Fund, Canyon City Lodge #730, PO Box 187, Canyon, TX 79015.
