Billie Byars Erwin, 88, of Amarillo, died Sunday, September 10, 2017 in Amarillo. Memorial services will be at 2:00 P.M. on Thursday, September 14, 2017 at First Baptist Church of Canyon with Rev. Jim Hancock officiating. Private burial will be in Dreamland Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. on Wednesday, Sept. 13 at Brooks Chapel in Canyon. Billie Byars Erwin was born December 13, 1928 in Randall County Texas to Alice Wynell Masterson and Lonnie Luther Byars. She graduated from West Texas State Teachers College High School and later from West Texas State Teachers College, both of which were located on the current WTAMU campus.She married Harold Lee Erwin on August 20, 1948 in Canyon. Billie was a loving and dedicated wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, great grandmother and friend. She embraced her life as a homemaker and volunteer. She loved her church and served faithfully there and in her community. She instilled in her children the importance of giving back to the community through servant leadership. She was a lifetime member of the First Baptist Church of Canyon, served for many years on the Dreamland Cemetery Board of Directors, and was a charter member of the University Federated Women's Study Club, the Panhandle Plains Museum Auxiliary, and Chi Omega Sorority. She also was active in PTA, the WTSU Phoenix Club, the WTSU Friends of Fine Arts, and worked as an election clerk for over a dozen years. Billie was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters, Dorothy Byars, Shirley White, and Joan Conner. The family would like to extend a special thank you to her caregiver, Dana Burkhalter. Survivors include her husband, Harold Erwin, of the home; son, David Erwin and wife, Sue, of Amarillo; two daughters, Tracie Brooks and husband, Shannon and Lisa Darnell and husband, Randy, all of Amarillo; eight grandchildren, Elise Erwin May, Tyson Erwin, Charley Erwin, Shane Brooks, Analisa Brooks Brewer, Trey Darnell, Elizabeth Darnell Haile, and Madelyn Darnell; and twelve great-grandchildren with two on the way.
