Graveside services will be at 10:00 A.M. on Tuesday, July 29, 2014 at Dreamland Cemetery with Rev. Gayle Bowen, associate pastor of First Baptist Church of Canyon, officiating. Viewing will be from 8:00 to 9:30 A.M. on Tuesday at Brooks Funeral Directors in Canyon. The family will receive friends following the service at First Baptist Church. A memorial service will be held on Monday, August 4, 2014 at 10:30 A.M. at College Heights Baptist Church in Alamosa. Beulah Eugenia Hammond Sykes Bible, age 88, passed away at the San Luis Valley Health Regional Medical Center on July 23, 2014. Born on October 5, 1925 to John Locke Hammond and Florence Belle Anthony Hammond in Tulia, TX, she has been a resident of Alamosa County since 1971. Her parents and both of her husbands, Ernest Tilman Sykes and Billy George Bible preceded her in death. Beulah was raised in the Panhandle of Texas, attending a one-room school near Happy, Texas until the age of ten. She then attended school in Canyon, Texas, graduating in 1942. She received a degree in education from West Texas Normal College (now West Texas A&M University) in Canyon in 1946. She taught school until marrying in 1947. Beulah was married to Ernest Sykes for 13 years. They had 5 children and lived in Canyon, TX, Phoenix, AZ, Albuquerque, NM, and Billings, MT. In 1960, she and the children moved to Amarillo, TX. She married Billy Bible in 1962 and moved to Canyon. Billy and Beulah had one son. Beulah was a member of College Heights Baptist Church in Alamosa. She played the piano and organ, taught Sunday school, managed the church library, and was the church secretary for many years. She was also a member of Gideons Auxiliary & Eastern Star. She loved to travel and make new friends. She has been a faithful and loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend to all she met. We will miss her very much. Beulah is survived by one sister, Martha Warren of Amarillo, TX, and all 6 of her children and their spouses: Charles & Lisa Sykes of Alamosa, CO, Judith & Richard Cummins of Bryan, TX, Martha & George Butz of Appleton, WI, Melanie & Earl Shook of Greenville, TX, Cheryl & Johnny Dotson of Georgetown, TX, and George & Joan Bible of Chesterfield, MO. She has 24 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews all of whom adored their Gigi. Memorials may be made to Gideons International or the charity of your choice.
