Alvin Henry Kuhlman lived a full life in Canyon, Texas from his birth on May 29, 1925 until his death on November 30, 2025. Alvin grew up as the son of Herman Kuhlman, an early pioneer in Randall County, and Alma Mari Gerdsen Kuhlman on the family farm east of Canyon. He had two brothers, Herbert and Jim. Alvin lived through the Great Depression and gained an education through Randall County public schools. After graduating from Canyon High School in 1941, Alvin started college at Texas A&M University where he heard about the attack on Pearl Harbor. He spent a few semesters at A&M with an intense study of engineering. In 1944 he joined the United States Navy, serving until receiving an honorable discharge on July 4, 1946. In the navy he became an electronic technician, learning a skill which would aid him later in life. He went to West Texas State University with aid of the G.I. Bill and finished his formal education with a degree in accounting. In 1952 he went to Bremen, Germany and met Liselotte Schultze-Gildehaus. They married the next year and remained together for 72 years. The couple had three children, Monika born in 1954, Berniece born in 1956, and Martin born in1961. They have two grandchildren, Vanessa Thornton and Stefani Elliott. Alvin and Liselotte also have great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Alvin has cousins living in Germany.
Alvin spent years farming in Randall County growing winter wheat and maize as well as raising livestock. With the skills he learned in the navy he became a television repairman for a number of years. He also designed and built a number of houses and an apartment building in Canyon. He utilized solar engineering in these buildings.
Alvin was always involved in the community. He held membership in the Canyon Rotary Club for over 20 years. He was a member of the Lutheran Church in Canyon. He studied U.S. and world history and stayed informed on world events. Alvin and Liselotte traveled the world making numerous trips to Europe. Alvin absorbed the culture and history of these countries.
A celebration of Alvin’s life will be held at a memorial visitation on December 21, 2025, from 4:00-7:00 at the Creek House Honey Farm Events Center, east of Canyon. Memorial donations may be made to SNAK PAK 4 KIDS at sp4k.org., 701 Park Place Ave., Amarillo, Texas 79101 or your favorite charity.
