Viola Belle Smart was born in Catlett, Virginia on September 17, 1938 to Lin and Dora Casebolt. Her heavenly day was Thursday, March 15, 2018. Memorial services will be at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, March 17 at First United Methodist Church in Canyon with Rev. Joan Gaines, Pastor Covenant Presbyterian Church Amarillo and Rev. Kevin Deckard, Associate Pastor Polk Street United Methodist Church officiating.
At an early age, Viola’s family moved to Cedar Vale, Kansas. She was a secretary for law firms for a couple of years, was the secretary for the Nursing Department at West Texas State University and then was offered and accepted the Clerk in Charge position for the United States Federal Probation Office, where she retired in 2002.
She was a wonderful wife, mother and Grandy. Her family and extended family loved going to her house for holidays and weekends. She was a good cook, loved to see her family, enjoyed her vacations, especially going to the beaches in Acapulco, South Padre Island and going on cruises. She was so excited when the grandbabies started to arrive and would drop everything to come help out. Her children all strived to be as wonderful a parent as she was.
She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi for several years, serving in many capacities. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Canyon and the Pathfinder Class. She performed in plays and enjoyed the fun and laughter. She taught classes on Stress Management and Divorce Care. During one of her classes she met and married Ken Smart. They enjoyed redoing houses and traveling together.
She was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2006. In 2014, she moved to Almost Home, a care home owned and operated by Phillas Rich. We owe our deepest gratitude to Phillas (our saint) because for three and ½ years Phillas provided loving tender care. We also thank Sue Honeycutt and Tim Altman, Vi’s angels, who provided care when Phillas was out of the home. We would also like to thank the staff of Kindred Hospice for their help and care, especially Cherie Claxton, Christie Parsons, Sam White and Krista Rodgers, for their prayers and songs.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Lin Casebolt and her sister Pearl Huxley.
She is survived by her husband, Ken Smart, her children Debi Meng and husband Arlen of Weatherford, Greg Taylor of Canyon, Brenda Peoples and husband Allen of El Reno, Tere Anderson of Canyon and Tiffany Smart of Hewitt.
