Obituary for WILMA VIRGINIA JOHNSON

Services will be 10:00 A.M. Monday, June 8 at the First Baptist Church with Dr. David L. Lowrie, Jr., pastor, officiating. Burial will be at Dreamland Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 6:00 P.M. Sunday, June 7 at Brooks Chapel. Mrs. Johnson will be available for viewing on Sunday, June 7 from 11:00 to 6:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Wilma Virginia Johnson of Amarillo took the hand of Jesus on her 86th birthday and entered her heavenly home on Friday, June 5, 2009. Wilma was born June 5, 1923 in Brownsboro, Texas to Richard Alvin and Johnnie Irene Barton. On August 24, 1946, in Dallas, Texas, she married James Roland Johnson of Grand Prairie, Texas. They have been best friends and lovers for 63 years. Together they provided a happy, secure, and Godly home for their three daughters. They moved to Canyon in 1964 and were very active in the community until moving to Amarillo in 2008. At age 12, while she was attending a tent revival, Wilma opened her heart to the Lord Jesus and submitted her life to His leadership. She was baptized at Calvary Baptist Church in Bonham, Texas. She loved and followed the Lord throughout her life and was active in First Baptist Church in Canyon, where she loved singing in the choir. Wilma was employed as a secretary at the First Baptist Church in Canyon for 3 years prior to her employment with the Canyon ISD as school secretary, and then at West Texas State University for 10 years, retiring in 1983. She was a member of Canyon Retired Teachers Association, National Secretaries Association, and W.T. Women. She was also very active in PTA and Band Parents Association during her daughters" school years. Wilma was such a happy person with a beautiful big smile who loved getting to know people and being involved in their lives. She never met a stranger and would give a hug to anyone. Wilma was a very loyal friend. She enjoyed meeting numerous W.T. students through the Adopt-A-Buff program. Wilma loved to talk, go fishing, play dominoes, work crossword puzzles, and travel. Her greatest joy was being "Memaw" to her 6 grandchildren. She was looking forward to being a great grandmother to twin boys born one month ago. She has provided many happy memories for her entire family and her presence will be forever missed. Wilma was preceded in death by her parents; a stepfather, Willie Stayton; a stepmother, Belle Atkinson; her brothers, Richard A. Barton, Jr. and A.D. Barton; and a sister, Polly Lawler. Survivors include her husband, Roland, of the home, three daughters, Karyn Wooten and husband, Ronnie, of Amarillo, Jana Wartes and husband, Mike, of Canyon, Roma Starkey, of Tampa, Florida; sister-in-law, Ruth Barton, of Shreveport, Louisiana; sister, Yvonne Fortner and husband, Joe, of Midland; two brothers, Danny Stayton and wife, Betty, of Grand Prairie, Dwight Barton and wife, Jean, of Big Spring; six grandchildren, Valerie Griffin and husband, Nathan, of Pflugerville, Garrett Wooten and wife, Brittanie, of Amarillo, Kylee Hay and husband, Chris, of Tyler, Cade Wartes and wife, Anne Marie, of Childress, Zachary Starkey, of Naples, Florida, Ross Starkey, of Naples, Florida; twin great grandsons, Carter and Miles Griffin, of Pflugerville; and numerous nieces and nephews who greatly loved their Aunt Wilma.
