The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. on Friday, November 4, 2011 at Brooks Chapel. Burial will be in Dreamland Cemetery. William Battle Harris is face to face with Christ November 2, 2011 at the age of 94. He was born in Iowa Park, Texas to Roy C. Harris and Effie L. Palmer Harris on July 23, 1917. They moved to Lawton, OK and then to Sundown, TX in 1928. He graduated from Levelland H.S. in 1936 and he married his high school sweetheart, Mildred Mathis, in 1937. Battle graduated from Wayland Baptist College in 1938, Texas Tech University in 1946, and earned his Master of Education in 1951 at West Texas State College. He started his teaching career in Muncie, TX in 1939, then taught at Baker School in Floyd County. He was Elementary Principal at Lorenzo, Principal at Floydada High School during World War II, and Superintendent of Groom ISD from 1947-1952. He served as District President of Dist. 9 Texas State Teachers Association. Battle began his own business of "Spreading Joy" in 1952 and moved the family to Canyon. He went to work for Southern Engraving Company selling graduation supplies and class rings, Fruhauf Band Uniforms, and senior portraits for Marquise Studios. In 1971 Herff Jones Company purchased Southern Engraving meaning Battle no longer had to package his own products. Many of his dear friends were the school people of the Panhandle and all of Texas. Battle was an outgoing Christian man whose thoughts were "Don"t sweat the small stuff. If you can"t do anything about it, move on. God is in charge." He received the Silver Beaver Award from the Boy Scouts of America, which is the highest honor bestowed upon a civilian, for his work in scouting. While in Groom, he was president of the Lions Club. He was a 32nd Degree Mason. He served as a Deacon, Sunday school teacher, and Sunday school director at First Baptist Church of Canyon, TX. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mildred, an infant granddaughter, two sisters, Carlene Carter and Minnie Mae Lewis, and two brothers, LeRoy Harris and Thomas Harris. Battle is survived by two sons, Roy Harris and wife, Rhema Dell, of Canyon, and Ronny Harris and wife, Kay, of Lubbock; one daughter, Kathryn Hoggatt and husband, Johnny, of Hedley; seven grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to First Baptist Church Library Fund, 1717 4th Avenue, Canyon, TX 79015, Cal Farley"s Boys Ranch, PO Box 1890, Amarillo, TX 79174, or Canyon Senior Citizens, 1719 5th Avenue, Canyon, TX 79015.
