Obituary for VIOLA BETTS

Services will be 2:00 P.M. Friday, November 6 at the First Baptist Church in Adrian, Texas with Rev. Bob Miller, pastor of South Georgia Baptist Church in Amarillo, officiating. Interment will be at Vega Cemetery in Vega, Texas. The family will receive friends on Thursday, November 5 at Brooks Chapel from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Viola "Okie" Betts born to Charles and Mary Susan Gill in Deer Creek, Texas May 25, 1915 the 5th of twelve children. Her best friend was Thelma White and thus she met Thelma"s brother, Horace Seldon Betts. And as she tells it he swept her off her feet; but he always said, "he met his princess." They married August 23, 1935 in Walters, Oklahoma. They worked for Bridwell Ranch in Wichita Falls, Texas and then Horace transferred to Bridwell "West"Ranch, southwest of Adrian in 1944. Viola and family joined him later, when the job turned into more than a temporary dozer operator. She and Horace lived on Bridwell"s and he was foreman of West Ranch for 14 years. In 1958, they moved the family to Adrian and he was a self employed farmer rancher until his retirement in 1992. She was preceded in death by Horace "Pappy" in 2001; a son James Samuel Betts; one grandson, Stan Hammit; and one great-grandson, Nicolas Johnson. She is survived by: her daughter, Darla Bradshaw and husband, Ken of Adrian; her son, Butch Betts and wife, Jerry of Amarillo; and her daughter, Jolene Williams and husband, Terry of Canyon, Texas; 17 Grandchildren, 37 Great Grandchildren, and 2 Great Great Grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters, Marie Browning, of Wichita Falls, Texas and Berneice Schlieper, of Eufala, Alabama and one brother, Doyle Gill of Carrollton, Texas. Viola was a homemaker and the perfect mother and grandmother to all her children.
