Tim Payne, 64, of Happy, Texas passed away on Tuesday, May 15, 2018. Graveside services will be at 9:30 a.m Saturday, May 19 at the Happy Cemetery for family and close friends.   All are welcome to the following service  with Rev. Tom Stribling, pastor of the United Methodist Church, officiating at the Community Center in Happy at 10:30 a.m.  Arrangements are by Brooks Funeral Directors. Continuing after the formal services will be what Tim really wanted:  food and storytelling, so even if you can’t make the early services, please come hungry to the Community Center with your best Tim story.   By the way, Tim wanted all this to happen at 4:30 a.m. so he would know who his real friends are, but the family felt that was a little much to ask (nonetheless, isn’t it a fine example of a good Tim story?). Tim was born on November 25, 1953 at Amarillo Air Force Base to Thomas and Shirley Elliott Payne.  That early introduction to the mechanical world may have influenced his amazing abilities to build, fix, or imagine things.Tim was a self-employed water well man.  He was one of a few who continued to service water windmills in the Texas Panhandle.  On his gravestone will be engraved “A Pretty Good Windmill Man”.  He provided a myriad of other services as Payne Enterprises, Happy Woodrod and Southwest Monitoring .   He was a longtime resident of the Happy community, first building an adobe house with his family east of town.   He then moved a house and caboose west of town and planted an oasis of trees watered by a windmill with a Texas tail. There was not much Tim could not fix.   Happy and surrounding communities were always bringing stuff by his shop. He loved to help people and was such a kind-hearted soul.  He volunteered on the fire department and was a mainstay in Happy Days.  His handiwork is seen throughout the area and at the Community Center.  In addition, he always had many of his own projects and hobbies to work on including power parachuting, sourdough cooking, cow and calf operations on the family land, and just building stuff. Tim loved spending time with his grandchildren, his nieces, nephews, cousins, his parents, and grandparents.  He met a wonderful woman from Colorado, Patricia (Trish) French who he was hoping to spend many years with. He was preceded in death by his father, Tom, and a brother, John. He is survived by many Payne’s: daughter, Christy of Corpus Christi; son, Ted and wife, Jenna of Happy; grandchildren, Reganne, Tyler, Taysen, and Jade; mother, Shirley of Canyon; sister, Sheila of Durango, CO; niece and nephews Bonnie of Amarillo,  Dave and wife Darcie of Umbarger, Clint,  Jesse and wife Geneva of Durango, CO.  Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, ALS, a devastating disease with no known cause or cure ripped this wonderful man from all of us who love him.  Thank you to those who provided your support personally to Tim at the local benefit that was held in June of 2017.  The ALS Association provides funding for research to find a cure for ALS and provide much-needed services to patients and their families.  If you wish to make an a contribution in Tim’s memory, please consider donating at http://www.alsa.org/donate/.
