Obituary for Shayne Mays

Shayne Mays, 47, of Canyon, passed away on Tuesday, May 18, 2021. Memorial services will be at 3:00 P.M. on Friday, May 21, 2021 at Hillside Christian Church – Amarillo West Campus with Trae Sweatt officiating.

Shayne was born on August 20, 1973 in Lubbock to Billy and Sharla (Sanders) Mays. Shayne enlisted in the U.S. Army through a pilot program when he was 17 and proudly served eight years with one tour in Bosnia. Shayne completed the Panhandle Regional Law Enforcement 72nd Academy through Amarillo College in 1996 and worked as a Jailer in Randall County until 1999. He then worked for the Canyon Police Department, retiring in 2013. He joined the Randall County Sheriff’s Office as a patrol deputy in 2013, was promoted to sergeant over narcotics and spent the last seven years working in the Special Operations Unit as a federal task force officer for HSI.

Shayne married Letisia Gonzales in Canyon on August 20, 2018 and they created a life they loved, together, in Canyon. Shayne was all in no matter what he was working on, fully committed to every task from work to barbeque. He loved welding and working in his barn and always had a project going. The weekends Shayne loved most were ones that involved barbeque and cooking competitions. He was a wonderful cook and loved entertaining. Shayne was passionate about hunting and enjoyed fishing with his friends. He held a special love for his dogs, Elam and Nina.

Shayne is survived by his wife, Letisia; daughter, Kaylee Mays; son, Tyler Mays; stepchildren, J.D. and wife, Krystal McClain, Matt and wife, Krissy McClain, and Heather and husband, Trey Ogle; grandson, Ezra McClain; his parents, Bill Mays and Sharla Mays; sister, Brandie Green; nephews, Cody and wife, Katie Green and Trey Green; and uncle, Andy Mays and wife, C.J.
