Obituary for Sarah Beth Hinders

Sarah Elizabeth Hinders -Sarah Beth- 85, passed away Saturday, October 22nd, 2022. Memorial services will be at 10:00 am Monday, November 7th at the First Methodist Church in Canyon with Rick Enns officiating.

Sarah Beth was born to John Ralston Barnhart and Thelma Goodner Barnhart on February 2nd, 1937 (Ground Hogs Day) in Freeport Texas. She grew up on a farm northeast of Kress, Texas. She loved being outside with her dad and playing with friends and her brother Johnny. She loved music and played the clarinet in the Kress band, but the piano was her passion. She played in recitals and was a member of the National Fraternity of Student Musicians. She was valedictorian of her class at Kress High School and went on to study music at West Texas State College. She met the love of her life at the Wesley Student Center.

She was married to Raymond Hinders on March 17, 1957 (St. Patrick’s Day). They moved to Ft. Collins, Colorado to continue their education at Colorado State College A & M (CSU). Sarah Beth was a wonderful mother to four boys. They moved back to the Hinders family farm, south of Canyon in the Jowell Community in 1968. It was a special place for her and her family. Jowell provided lifelong friends, social life, employment for her sons and those necessary “extra parents” to keep an eye on and mentor her boys.

Sarah Beth played piano in church from her youth at Kress and continued playing for several churches in Canyon and California. She led Sunday School wherever she went to church and children’s choir and hand bell choir at the Methodist Church in Canyon. She was a 4-H leader and began teaching piano. Her best students early on were the neighbor kids, with her more reluctant and less dedicated students being her sons.
Sarah Beth, Raymond, and Brad moved to Lodi California in 1981. They developed dear friendships there in the community and at Galt Methodist Church and St. Paul Lutheran Church in Lodi. She loved California and getting to see new sights and nature there. She loved walking at the Mokelumne River with Raymond and with family when they came to visit.

She taught piano in California as well and loved her students. She continued her music education at University of the Pacific and was a member of the Lodi and San Joaquin branches of the Music Teachers Association of California.

She nurtured and loved us all and made wherever she was home. She was a beloved and caring Grammy. She was always interested in all the grandkids’ activities and individual lives. She moved back to Canyon in 2016.

Sarah Beth lived simply and loved all people and her family. She will be missed.

She was preceded in death by her husband Raymond Hinders. Survivors include her brother, John Barnhart and his wife, LouAnn. Her boys and their wives: Gary and Linda, Greg and Diane, Neal and Nancy all of Canyon, and Brad and Terrie of Galt, California. She is also survived by 11 Grandchildren and 11 Great Grandchildren with # 12 due in November.
