Obituary for Sammie Johnson

Sammie Johnson, 90, of Canyon, passed away on Wednesday, March 25, 2020. Private graveside services will be held at Dreamland Cemetery in Turkey, Texas with Bill Adcox officiating.

Mrs. Johnson was born February 1, 1930 in Bailey County, Texas to Sam and Thelma (Kinser) Russell. She grew up on a farm near Muleshoe but her family moved to Abilene, Texas where she graduated from high school in 1947. She married Delos Johnson, the love of her life, in Abilene on February 28, 1948. Together they shared 66 years of marriage. She supported Delos as a pastor throughout their marriage. They lived and served with Churches of Christ in Seagraves, Midland, Arlington and Quitique. In 2012, they moved to Canyon to be closer to family. At the time of her passing, she was a member of Canyon Hills Church of Christ.

Mrs. Johnson was a homemaker and mother. In addition to serving in church activities, she volunteered with the Arlington Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and community programs for under privileged children with the city of Arlington. Her volunteer hours exceeded 2500. She also worked for Transamerica as a clerk for 15 years. One of her most enjoyable past-times was playing dominoes. She was nicknamed “Sammie Domino Johnson” at The Conner Place where she lived for the last eight years. Mrs. Johnson was dearly loved and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, sister, Nova Vaughn, and a granddaughter, Amber Aviles. Survivors include her two sons, Eugene Johnson of Azle, and Ted Johnson of Arlington; three grandchildren; and many loving nieces and nephews.

The family suggests memorials be to a favorite charity.
