Obituary for SALLY FUGATE NESTER

Memorial Service will be 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, August 5, 2006 at the First Presbyterian Church of Canyon with The Rev. Dr. Don McDonald, officiating. Sally Nester was born in Live Oak County on October 27, 1913. She graduated from Kingsville High School at the age of sixteen, and attended nursing school at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, where she received her degree. This was also where she met Charles R. Nester, and the couple was married in Houston in 1932. In 1948, the family moved to Canyon where Mrs. Nester was very active in community and area activities. Mrs. Nester was a Sunday school teacher and youth advisor at the Presbyterian Church where she was also a member of the women"s association and helped to create the Chrismon decorations and the "web" that adorns the church. She was a Girl Scout leader for many years, and helped raise funds to build the scout house in Canyon. She was instrumental in starting the Canyon troops" summer day camp. In recognition of her efforts, she was named Canyon"s Citizen of the Year in 1967. She was recognized by the Amarillo Council of the Girls Scouts as a " Woman of Distinction" in 1996. She was a member of Canyon"s Sewing Club and enjoyed hosting many of their Christmas and Fourth of July gatherings. She was a Life member and early supporter of the Texas Panhandle Heritage Foundation. She helped to start a Candy Stripers" program at the local hospital in early 1960"s. Mrs. Nester was superb role model to her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and to young women who were scouts. She was preceded in death by her husband, two grandchildren, and a son-in-law. Survivors include; her son, Chuck Nester and wife, Mary of Canyon; two daughters, Sally Brantley of Canyon and Kay Failla and husband, Frank of Morristown, NJ; eight grandchildren, Leta and husband, Jeff Smith of Happy, George and wife, Paige Nester of Canyon, Sally and husband, Jeremy Brandt of Vancouver, WA, Katie and husband, Sean Milligan of Amarillo, John and wife Tiffany Brantley of Austin, Chuck and wife, Krissy Brantley of Plano, Susan Brantley of Dallas, and Lauren Failla of Morristown, NJ; eleven great grandchildren, Luke, Gracie and Jake Smith, Bentley and Abbi Brandt, Carley, Blake, and Caiden Nester, Max and Jack Milligan, and Charlie Brantley; and sister-in-law, Katherine Evans of Kingsville. The family would like to extend special thanks to Cath Oaks, Imogene Turner, Dora Lineman, and the entire staff of Hospice of the Southwest.
