Obituary for RUTH WIGGS HENSON

Ruth Wiggs Henson, 88, of Canyon, died Saturday, November 9, 2002. Services will be 2:00 PM Tuesday, November 12, 2002 at the First Baptist Church of Canyon with Rev. David Lowrie officiating. Burial will be in Dreamland Cemetery. Ruth Wiggs Henson was born October 7, 1914 in Commerce, Texas to Benjamin and Stella Cowan Wiggs and died in Amarillo on November 9, 2002. She had four sisters and one brother, two of whom have preceded her in death. Ruth attended East Texas State College in Commerce where she met Virgil Henson whom she married four years later after teaching in a one-room schoolhouse. She moved to Canyon as a bride in 1937. They were with WTAMU for 37 years. Mr. Henson preceded her in death in 1983. First Baptist Church was a very important part of her life. She served as a Sunday School teacher in every age department including University for 50+ years. She also directed Training Union, was President of WMU, and active as a GA leader for many years. Mrs. Henson was a member of Sue Hite Federated Club since 1937 and served in every office of that club; served on the Randall County Library Board many years, a member of Merry Maids and Matrons 42 Club, the Priscilla Club, and Canyon Retired Teacher Association. Mrs. Henson assisted in the Canyon Art Gallery for 37 years. The family will be at #2 Bogey Circle. Survivors include two daughters, Beverly and Alan Hanks, of West Lafayette, Indiana and Marion and Jimmy Marrs, of Canyon; five grandchildren, Craig Hanks, of San Antonio, Texas, Denise Hawkins, of Abilene, Texas, Leta Cruse, of Arlington, Texas, Michelle Arndt, of Canyon, and Christy Manley, of Canyon; twelve great grandchildren; and three sisters, Virginia Murschel, of Bloomington, Illinois, Nita Clark, of Commerce, Texas, and Frances Grayson, of Trinidad. The family suggest memorials be to the Virgil Henson Scholarship Fund at OPI, 504 24th St, Canyon, TX 79015 and/or First Baptist Church Building Fund 1717 4th Ave, Canyon, TX 79015.
