Obituary for Ruby Marceline Tharp

Ruby Marceline Tharp, 91, passed away on Sunday, April 5, 2020 in Canyon, Texas. Private graveside services and burial will be at 2:00 P.M. on Wednesday, April 8, 2020 at Dreamland Cemetery in Canyon with Associate Pastor, Dale Moreland, officiating.

Ruby was born June 22, 1928 in Dallam County, Texas to Elmer William and Viola Nellie Ehart Heiskell. Ruby met Foy Tharp in Belton, Texas when she was attending Mary Hardin Baylor College. They married on August 17, 1947. They moved to Galup, New Mexico where she taught on the Navajo Reservation. They then moved back to Dalhart where they started farming. Ruby later went to OPSU and received a B.S. in Education. She then started teaching in Dalhart and later earned her Master’s Degree in Education from Wayland Baptist University. When Ruby retired from teaching, they moved to Amarillo. They became members of Quail Creek Church.

Ruby was an active member in many service clubs including DAR, Texas Federated Women’s Club where she held offices, Women’s Volunteer Support for Veterans and families, Randall County Extension, Quilting Club, and participated in a bowling league.

Ruby is preceded in death by her husband, parents, three brothers, one sister, and one grandchild.

Survivors include three children, Janice Tharp Stockett and husband, James of Amarillo, Beth Tharp Varner and husband, Russ of Dalhart, and Mark Tharp and wife, Cindy of Canyon; seven grandchildren, Kyle and Olivia Alexander of Dallas, Brittni Alexander and Dr. Chin Ho of Norwood, NY, Chris and Lisa Stevenson of Amarillo, Shane and Rachel Stevenson of Dalhart, Drs. Matthew and Kassandra Varner of Cape Coral, FL and Kara Varner of Minneapolis, MN, and Marshall and Sarah Tharp of San Angelo; seven great grandchildren; and one great, great grandson.

The family suggests memorials be sent to Hudson House in Canyon where she was cared for and loved by so many people: Hudson House, 3210 Russell Long Blvd., Canyon, Texas 79015.
