Roy Merrell Winstead, 72, of Canyon, passed away on Thursday, September 12, 2019. Services will be 10:00 A.M. Saturday, September 14 at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Rick Enns, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow at Dreamland Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday, September 13 from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. at Brooks Chapel. Merrell was born October 8, 1946 in Canyon to Joe and Minnie Lou Merrill Winstead. He married Jan Bennett on June 14, 1969. Merrell spent 34 years working for the Texas Highway Department as an assistant engineer. He loved horses and farmed close to Happy. He was a member of the Randall County Sheriffs Posse, the domino group on the square, Happy Senior Citizens, the card group at the elevator in Happy and the First United Methodist Church of Canyon. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Kathryn Hefner and brother, Joe Marlin Winstead. Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Jan; two daughters, Monica Avery and husband Patrick, Donna Knight and husband Brian; grandchildren, Trip and Bash Avery, Dustin and Samantha Knight; and a sister, Brenda Winstead.
