Obituary for ROSS LOWELL RUSSELL

A casual, informal memorial gathering of friends and family will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 P.M. on Saturday, May 9, at the First Christian Church"s Fellowship Hall, 2011 4th Avenue in Canyon. Ross was born October 10, 1926 in Panhandle, Texas to George Lee and Viola (Taylor) Russell. He lived in the Arney community and the Happy area for his early schooling. He also lived in Amarillo and Canyon, and he graduating in 1944 from West Texas High ( the demonstration school of West Texas Teachers College) along with Louise Conatser, whom he married on June 5, 1949. She preceded him in death in 2002. He worked as a carpenter in his early years which he often recalled with fond memories. In 2003, Ross met Velma Jean Baker and they danced many Friday nights at the Amarillo Senior Citizens Association Forty Five Uppers Social. He and Jean were married in August of 2004. During WW II, Ross served in the Maritime Service and the Army. He completed jump school at Ft. Benning, Georgia. Ross continued making a living as a carpenter until he joined the U.S. Postal Service in 1953, where he served as a city letter carrier, window clerk, assistant postmaster, and rural carrier. Following retirement from the postal office, Ross worked for the Panhandle Plains Historical Museum before retiring again after 10 years. Through the years, Ross worked with Boy Scouts and Little League where his two sons were involved, and he supported football at school. He enjoyed fishing and camping with his family. He also liked to take long walks, ride bicycles, play tennis, read, listen to music, and swim. WT Athletics and programs put on by the Fine Arts Department were enjoyed. He was a devoted participant in the Home Builders Sunday School Class at Polk Street Methodist Church, and he especially enjoyed the preaching of Rev. Kevin Deckard. Ross was an enthusiastic volunteer at the Palo Duro Canyon State Park Interpretive Center, Meals On Wheels, Harrington Cancer Center, the Amarillo Senior Citizens Center, Ceta Glenn Christian Church Camp, and the First Christian Church of Canyon. Survivors include his wife, Jean Baker Russell, of the home; two sons, Ron Russell and wife, Geri, of Canyon, and Steve Russell and wife, Karen, of Riverside, CA; a sister, Ruth Marlys Hickmott, of Amarillo; a brother, Dale Russell and wife, Billie, of Plainview; six grandchildren; and two great grandsons.
