Robert Eldon Gatten, Jr, 93, of Royse City, passed away on Sunday, August 5, 2018. Graveside services will be held at Dreamland Cemetery in Canyon, Texas on August 13 at 2:00 pm. A memorial service will be held at the First Christian Church of Rockwall on August 27th at 2:00 pm. Robert (Bob) Gatten was preceded in death by parents Robert Sr. and Lena Gatten, sisters Marilee Butler and Dot Dowis, and brothers Hugh and Kenneth Gatten. Bob is survived by his wife of 73 years, Dorothy Costley Gatten; his son Galen Glenn Gatten and wife Sharon, of Rockwall; his daughter Darene Gatten Turner of Mesquite; and his son Davin Alan Gatten of Royse City. Bob is also survived by his grandchildren, Galen Glenn Gatten, Jr. and wife Stacey of Grand Prairie, Brian Gatten and wife Clare of Austin, and Stephen Gatten, of Carrollton; Kallie Turner of Irving, Kory Turner of Ft. Worth, and Kerry Turner and wife Jannelle of Carrollton; great-grandchildren Oliver and Arthur Gatten, and Brooke Turner; and numerous nieces and nephews. Bob was born in Happy, Texas, on October 30, 1924. He was a proud graduate of Happy High School and returned often for class reunions. Everyone he ever met knew that he was a proud son of Happy, “The Town without a Frown”, Texas. While working on the Costley farm between Canyon and Amarillo he met and married Dorothy Jean Costley on May 13, 1945. He proudly built their first home in Canyon in 1951. In 1969, after the closing of the Amarillo Air Force Base, the family moved to the Dallas area where Bob, as a finish carpenter, worked on buildings throughout the Dallas, Ft. Worth, and Denton areas. He was a proud union carpenter for 73 years. Bob was instrumental in remodeling the First Christian Church in Canyon and the First Christian Church in Mesquite. Since 1978 Bob and Dorothy have resided in Royse City, Texas. They are members of the First Christian Church of Rockwall. Bob had an abundance of love for church, family, pets, Happy, Texas, and camping in the mountains of Colorado. He was known to others as a person who took great pleasure in doing things for his children, spending time with grandchildren; and being the kind of person that would ‘give you the shirt off his back’. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to a charity of your choice.
