Robert Ferguson, 74, passed away on January 24, 2022. He was born on April 10, 1947 in Plainview, Texas to Joe G. and Erma (Miller) Ferguson.
After graduating from PHS, Bob continued his education at the University of New Mexico on a football scholarship. After playing several years, his priority became focusing on his engineering studies. In 1967, he transferred to Texas Tech University. That fall he married Christine Duewall whom he met at UNM.
After receiving his diploma, he began working at Caterpillar Tractor Company in Peoria, Illinois. During the following 40 years, he worked for a variety of companies in several different industries, including railroad tank cars, oil and gas, and water jet cutting. He retired from Amarillo Gear in 2006.
Ferg’s definition of a good life was caring for his family. His leadership began with his marriage to Chris. They were partners for 54 years: sharing the magical and mundane moments, the joys and the sorrows, the triumphs and the disappointments.
His devotion to his son, Eric, was instant and constant. He played with his baby boy, coached adolescent sports teams, and was always available with a kind word of advice. His goal was to raise an independent, happy man. He was more than successful. Ferg ended up with a son who loved him as a father and a friend.
He became Gpa with the birth of Colin and Cassidy. His quiet calm, playful spirit and cooking skills were the foundation of meaningful close relationships with both. Whether it be a water gun fight or widening their world through travel experiences, he was fully engaged with enjoying them.
A quiet man of sharp wit, he could turn on “the sparkle” – charming a room, making the best brandy alexander, making everyone feel special and appreciated. Actions were his love language. He was a man who lived life serving others by sharing quality time and offering words of affirmation.
His weakened body died of covid pneumonia. His spirit will continue through memories and shared stories.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his older brother, Joe Ferguson. He is survived by his wife, Chris; son, Eric (Heather); grandchildren, Colin and Cassidy; sisters-in-law, Donna Ferguson and Julie Perkins; numerous nieces and nephews; and special family friends, the Drochners.
Private family services will be held at a later date.
Memorial donations may be sent to Faithbuilders, 7525 Tripp, Amarillo, TX 79121.
