Interment will follow at Dreamland Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday, May 10 from 6:00 to 7:30 P.M. at Brooks Chapel. Arrangements are by Brooks Funeral Directors. Sherman was born on May 12, 1942 in Canyon to William and Lillie Huskey McCarter. He was the baby of 9 children. He was the last one that was living out of the three girls and six boys. When Sherman was a young boy his father passed away and his mother continued to care for and provide for the children. He remembered and praised his mother frequently for all that she did for him. He knew that he was not the easiest child to raise and if he ever forgot that, his siblings and in-laws were there to remind him. Sherman was raised in the church and his mother took him to church faithfully. When he was in his 20’s he began attending Calvary Baptist Church and was baptized there. While at Calvary, he taught and worked with the RA’s. He loved the experiences of working with those boys. On December 27, 1970, he married Patricia Salmon in Canyon. They dated for 13 years before they said, “I do,” but were only engaged for a few weeks. People told them that 13 was an unlucky number but they shared over 48 wonderful years together and were blessed with two children, Randal Shane and Monique. Sherman loved helping with Boy Scouts with Shane and all his friends. He also enjoyed traveling to all the cross country and track meets and basketball games to cheer on his kids. Sherman was a painter and dry waller, a produce manager at Ideal Food, a salesman for Farmer Brothers Coffee, and a bus driver for TNMO and CISD. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Canyon, where he served as Deacon. He was also a member of the Bible Searchers Sunday School Class and the church choir. He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Willie Huskey, Eldon McCarter, Estelle Atkerson, Waunita Brown, Bill McCarter, Roy McCarter, Ray McCarter, and Carroll McCarter. Survivors include his wife, Patricia McCarter; son, Randal Shane McCarter and wife Lenise; daughter, Monique Galmor and husband Brandon; four grandchildren, Jaeden McCarter, Kaelan McCarter, Kylar Galmor, and Keagan Galmor; sister-in-law, Luella Slack; and many nieces and nephews. The family suggests memorials be made to the Boy Scouts of America, 401 Tascosa Rd, Amarillo, TX 79124.
