Obituary for Ravena McBrayer

Ravena Cunningham McBrayer, beloved child of God, was born on May 20, 1931 and passed away on Friday, April 8, 2022.

Services will be 2:00 P.M. Saturday, April 9, 2022 at Brooks Chapel with Dr. Roger Hubbard, officiating.

She adored her parents, Thomas Riley Cunningham and Cordie Glazner Cunningham. In her youth, she helped out on her parents’ farm and also learned valuable skills of cooking and sewing. She was an outstanding basketball player in High School. Her number was 00. Some called her “Double Aught”.

She met Jody McBrayer at Sam Norwood High School in 1946. They married right after graduation on July 31, 1948.

She was a devoted wife and mother, sewing, cooking, and raising her 4 children. She attended numerous ball games for her kids and her 7 grandkids. She often wrote letters to people, with the most beautiful handwriting.

Ravena and Jody went on many adventures together, traveling extensively and hunting and fishing.

She was on the board which founded Lake Tanglewood Church, of which she was a faithful member. To know Ravena was to witness firsthand God’s light shining through, in her humility, her work ethic, her contentment, her perseverance and her grace. She will be dearly missed.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 73 years, Joe D McBrayer, her brother, James Cunningham, and her grandson, AJ Moore.

She is survived by her brother, George Cunningham of Lubbock; her children, Denise Wright of Lubbock, Diane Moore of Amarillo, Ernie McBrayer of Amarillo, Eddy McBrayer of Amarillo; son-in-law, Lonnie Moore; daughter-in-law, Lori McBrayer; 6 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Alzheimer’s Association, 5410 Bell St. #411, Amarillo, TX 79109 or to Lake Tanglewood Community Church, 106 Lake Tanglewood Dr., Amarillo, TX 79118.
