Obituary for RAMONA PARKER WAKEFIELD

Celebration of life services will be held at 3:00 P.M. on Thursday, July 14, 2016 at Hillside Christian Church Chapel in Amarillo with Michael Kelly officiating. Graveside services will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Thursday at Lawn Havens Memorial Gardens, Clovis, NM. The family will receive friends from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. on Wednesday, July 13, 2016 at Brooks Chapel in Canyon. Ramona Parker Wakefield, a mother, sister, friend and teacher who loved her girls, grandkids and most of all the Bible entered her forever home on July 8, 2016. She was 67. Ramona was born Dec. 11, 1948, in Matador, TX but grew up in Causey, NM, where she learned to love reading and school. Graduating valedictorian at Causey High School in 1962, she enrolled at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales, NM. A short time later, she married her high school sweetheart, Joe Parker and earned a bachelor's degree in 1969 and master's degree in 1971. She began teaching kindergarten in Gallup, N.M. and then in Portales, N.M. The two welcomed three daughters, Kimberly Renee, in 1971 and Amy Jolene in 1975 and Jana Michelle in 1978. In 1979 they moved to Topeka, KS, for Joe to begin law school at Washburn University. Ramona earned her special education certification at Emporia University and began teaching in Topeka. In 1982 she moved to Clovis for Joe's law practice, and she taught at the Nazarene Christian School, Yucca Junior High and then assisted Joe with his own law practice. While in Clovis, she also taught fourth-grade Sunday school and led numerous Bible studies in her home. She always enjoyed journaling, walking, hosting her girls' families and spending time at their second home in Ruidoso, NM. In 2007, they moved to Canyon, Texas to be closer to their children for Joe's care. In Canyon, Ramona loved picking up her grandkids from school and attending Bible studies, PEO functions and worship at Hillside Christian Church. She met and married Jackie Wakefield in 2014. They enjoyed friends, traveling, and the Good Times Dance Club. Ramona was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Parker, her parents, O.T. and Monie Casey, and her sister Barbara Brown. The family is thankful for the love, support and care provided by family, friends, Nurse Core and Hospice Care of the Southwest. Survivors include her husband Jackie Wakefield of Amarillo; three children, Kim Bruce and husband Cory of Canyon, TX; Amy Duggan and husband Brad of Canyon, TX; Jana Kelley and husband Michael of Nashville, TN; two sisters, Joy Nelson and husband David of Tyler, TX; Norma Cooper and husband, James of Gallup, N.M.; and eight grandchildren who loved her dearly and called her Nana. The family suggests memorials be to Harrington Breast Cancer Center, 1310 Wallace Blvd., Amarillo, TX 79106.
