Obituary for Phyllis Mathis

Phyllis Mathis, 89, of Amarillo, passed away on Sunday, December 24, 2023. Services will be at 10:00 A.M. on Tuesday, January 2, 2024 at Happy’s Memorial Chapel with Silas Gartin and Brian Jagielski officiating. Burial will be in Wayside Cemetery.

Phyllis was born on January 29, 1934, to Jim and Bonnie Sluder on a farm near Wayside, Texas, and was a 1952 graduate of Happy High School. She dedicated many years of her life as a secretary for partial care at The Pavilion and held various jobs before concluding her career as a custodian and retiring at WTAMU.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, nine brothers and sisters: Thelma Hagains, Wayne Sluder, Evelyn Burns, Wilbur Sluder, Margaret Spencer, Lilburn Sluder, Wendell Sluder, Wilma Walker, and Dale Pryor. Additionally, she was preceded by one grandson, Justin Gyllenband.

Survivors include her four children, Johann Gyllenband and wife, Judy, of Amarillo; Darrell Gyllenband and wife, Cheryl, of Borger; Michele Bates and husband, Travis, of Amarillo; and Morton Mathis and wife, Kim, of Cypress, Texas. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Von and Alysa Gyllenband, Shanda Gill, Brandon Gyllenband, and Taylor Matthews; multiple great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Phyllis will be remembered as a fun and loving mother who brought joy to the lives of those around her. Phyllis, born a farm girl with a farm girl's spirit, always had a love for horses and treasured the tranquility of rural life. Additionally, Phyllis held a profound faith in God, which was a guiding force throughout her life. She will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
