Obituary for NEWTON JOYCE RICHARDSON

Memorial service will be at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, March 10, 2012 at First Baptist Church in Canyon with Rev. Bob Miller, pastor of South Georgia Baptist Church in Amarillo, and Dr. Howard K. Batson, pastor of First Baptist Church of Amarillo, officiating. Graveside services will be at 1:00 P.M. on Saturday at Dreamland Cemetery with Rev. Gene Jones, associate pastor of First Baptist Church of Canyon, officiating. The family will receive friends on Friday, March 9, 2012 from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at Brooks Chapel. Newton Joyce Richardson was born on October 9, 1920 in Troupe, Texas to Joseph Nelson and Julia Sophronia Ann Womack Richardson. His family moved to Wheeler County in 1926 to Twitty, Texas, near Kelton. He graduated from Kelton High School in 1939 and received his bachelor"s degree in Education from West Texas State College in 1949. He received his Master"s in Education from West Texas State University in 1962. He married Beryl Ellen Travis in Pampa in 1947. She preceded him in death in 2001. He was veteran of the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1945. He transferred to the Army Air Corps where he served as a Corporal in the 19th Bombardment Group Section of the 20th Air Force, Army Air Corps during the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign of World War II. He was stationed at Guam. Newton was a teacher and coach in Morse and Lelia Lake then served as principal at Clarendon High School in 1954. He moved to Canyon and taught and coached before becoming a counselor at Horace Mann Jr. High School in Amarillo in 1962. He retired from education in 1981. He was a member of Amarillo Classroom Teachers Association, Amarillo Retired Teachers Association, and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Canyon where he served as Chairman of the Finance Committee. He was Scout Master for Troop 197 in Canyon and a member of the Lady Buff Volleyball Booster Club. He enjoyed fishing, snow-birding in McAllen, and his cabin in the mountains of New Mexico. He was devoted to family and community and was a very devoted Buffs Booster. Newton was also preceded in death by his daughter, LuEllen Lightle, in 2010 and several brothers and sisters. Survivors include his daughter, Pam Butler and husband, Stephen, of Canyon; his son, Ben Richardson and wife, Karen, of Amarillo; a brother, Thurman Richardson, of Panhandle; seven grandchildren, Karen White, Jay White, Jolie Asher, Sarah Carthel, Beth Garner, Lauren Richardson, and Jonathan Richardson; and numerous great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren. The family suggests memorials be to the WTAMU Foundation, % the Beryl Richardson Volleyball Scholarship, WTAMU Box 60766, Canyon, TX 79016.
