Obituary for NANCY ELIZABETH STRAIN PETRUCCIONE

Nancy Elizabeth Strain Petruccione of Canyon died Sunday, May 26, 2002. Memorial Service will be at 4:00 P.M. on Tuesday, May 28, 2002 at the First Presbyterian Church of Canyon with the Rev. Dr. Don McDonald, pastor, officiating. There will be a private interment at Dreamland Cemetery. Mrs. Petruccione was born in Lancaster, Texas, to Horace and Mary Lee Strain. The family moved to Canyon in 1927. Mrs. Petruccione graduated from Canyon High School and received a Bachelor of Science in Education from West Texas State Teacher's College. She taught grade school in Miami, Texas, and spent several summers as a counselor for Life Camp in Connecticut and New Jersey. Mrs. Petruccione taught for the Amarillo Independent School District for eight years. She did graduate studies in social work at UCLA before returning to Amarillo where she was employed as a social worker by the Texas Department of Human Services until her retirement in 1975. After her retirement Mrs. Petruccione taught many local children at her Town and Country Kindergarten in Canyon. Nancy married Pete Petruccione on January 20, 1945, in Canyon. She was a memeber of the First Presbyterian Church of Canyon and served the church as a member of the choir, as a member and president of the Presbyterian Women's Association, as a Sunday school teacher, as the Sunday school superintendent, and as an Elder. Mrs. Petruccione was a member of the Panhandle Pen Women. Her writing reflected her interest in and study of the history of the southwestern United States, particularly the Texas Panhandle and the Moreno Valley of New Mexico. Recent interests include the Santa Fe Trail Association and the Spanish Peaks area of Colorado. Survivors include her husband; a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Gayle Teague of Los Alamos, NM; a son and daughter-in-law, Nicholas and Julie Petruccione of Canyon; a grandson and wife, Jonathan and Deanna Teague of Los Alamos; a grandson, Anthony Petruccione of Lubbock; a sister, Dorothy Stough of Citrus Grove, CA; neices Ann Nightingale of Ardmore, OK; Marcia Massey, of Clayton, NM; Wilda Lee Bell of Colorado Springs, CO; and Carol Schwab of Kendalia, TX; and cousins Martha Strain Phillips of Everett, WA, and Charles Strain of Phoenix. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials in Mrs. Petruccione's name to the John Hyson School at the Presbyterian Mission in Chimayo, NM: John Hyson School, P.O. Box 189, Chimayo, NM.
