Myrl McArthur Goodwin, age 79, of Canyon, Texas passed away peacefully at his home on September 10, 2016. Myrl was born in Canon City, Colorado on February 22, 1937 to Earl and Margaret McArthur Goodwin. He graduated from high school in Durango, Colorado in 1955. Myrl excelled in sports during high school and college, greatly influenced by his father and uncle's professional football and baseball careers. He received a basketball scholarship from the University of New Mexico, and played with them for three years. He then red shirted and played his senior year for Idaho State University, where he was named "Player of the Year". There, he went to the Sweet 16 in 1960. Being a versatile athlete, Myrl also was on the college rodeo team and won the College Tie Down Calf Roping Championship. After graduating from Idaho State, Myrl had an offer to play professional basketball in the NBA but elected to coach basketball and teach math in Pocatello, Idaho. Myrl continued to rodeo professionally, roping calves, and in 1978, influenced by Tom Gipson and Olin Young, Myrl began his steer roping career. Myrl loved and excelled in steer roping. In 1992 he was the Seniors World Champion Steer Roper, the Super Seniors Steer Roping Champion and the Super Seniors Finals Champion. In 1993, Myrl was ranked 16th in the PRCA Steer Roping Standings. In 1998 he won the Super Seniors Finals Championship and was also the Super Seniors Reserve Champion. In 2000, he won the Super Seniors Finals Championship. Myrl was a Gold Card Member of the PRCA. Myrl proudly wore his Pendleton and Cheyenne Buckles he won. Tall in stature and bigger in personality, when Myrl walked into a room all eyes looked his way. He had a love for family and friends and fully supported his rodeo family. He was a huge fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Denver Broncos. In 1976, he moved to Grand Junction, Colorado and became a real estate broker. Later he was a licensed broker in Texas, New Mexico and Oklahoma. Myrl moved to Canyon, Texas in 1992 and continued having a successful career selling ranches. He continued to rope competitively until recent years. Myrl married the love of his life, Pam Perner on December 12, 2003. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Earl Goodwin, Jr., and Myrl's beloved son, Colby Jay Goodwin, who died in 1999.
