Obituary for MATILDA GAUME

Matilda Gaume, 92, of Canyon, died Friday, December 27, 2002, in Amarillo. Services will be held at 10:00 am on Monday, December 30, 2002 at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Canyon with Rev. Phu T. Phan, pastor, officiating. Burial will take place in the Garden of the Holy Family in Memory Gardens Cemetery. Matilda was born in Argonia, Kansas, on January 19, 1910, to Harry Wilfred and Sarah Elizabeth Gaume. The family subsequently moved to Harper, Kansas, then later on to Wichita, Kansas. She attended grade school in Harper and spent her high school years at Mount Carmel Academy in Wichita. She earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Wichita, followed by a master's degree from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. She then taught two years in Paws Paw and campus training schools of the Western Michigan College of Education in Kalamazoo, and one year at Frances Shimer Junior College in Mt. Carroll, Illinois. In 1944, she moved to Canyon to teach in the Music Department of the then West Texas State Teachers College. She taught there until 1976, with time out during four summers and one winter to obtain a PhD in Musicology from the University of Indiana. During the summer of 1945, she studied piano at the Julliard School of Music in New York City. During her thirty years at West Texas, she introduced and taught fifteen different courses. Activities outside the classroom included organizing and administering an area-wide piano festival-competition. She was sponsor of the newly organized women's band sorority, Beta Tau Sigma. She was instrumental in organizing the Newman Club for Catholic Students and served as its sponsor for many years. She developed the music library and was then assigned to plan and organize the physical layout for the music library in the new Mary Moody Northern music building. She also developed a handbook for use of the music library. She promoted the formation of an ensemble using old instruments to play Medieval and Renaissance music (known as the Matilda Gaume Early Music Consort). This group performs annually at the University Madrigal Dinner. She served as acting head of the Music Department in 1963 until a permanent replacement was hired. She also served on the Faculty Council for two years. Awards and honors received by her include the W.T. Faculty Excellence Award (1971), the Texas Panhandle Award for Distinguished Service from W.T. (1982), award for service, dedication and loyalty from St. Ann's Catholic Church in Canyon, (1982), the title of Professor Emeritus from W.T. (1992), a Generosity Award for conducting eight sessions of the
