Obituary for Mary "Kay" Swinford

Mary “Kay” Swinford, 82, of Canyon, passed away on Wednesday, January 19, 2022.

Graveside services will be 1:00 P.M. Friday, January 21, 2022 at Dreamland Cemetery. Memorial services will follow at 2:00 P.M. at Brooks Chapel with Dr. Howard Batson, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Amarillo, officiating. The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 20, 2022 from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. at Brooks Chapel.

Kay was born on June 21, 1939 to Myles and Imogene Whisenhunt Kelly. She graduated from Pampa High School in 1957. She received a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from West Texas A&M University.
On June 21, 1959, she married James D. Swinford in Fort Worth, Texas.

Kay was a teacher at Arden Road Elementary School in Amarillo for many years. She led the dyslexia program and taught reading. Kay enjoyed reading and worked in the library at the First Baptist Church of Canyon.

Meeting with her Sunday School class on Sundays was something she looked forward to every week. She loved researching her family’s genealogy.

She also loved traveling to the mountains with James in their motorhome. They would often stay for three months at a time in the Wolf Creek Pass area in Colorado.

She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Gene Perkins; and a brother-in-law, Perry Tong.
Survivors include her husband of 62 years, James Swinford; daughter, Laura Taylor and husband Victor; sister, Pat Tong; and a nephew, Keith Radons and wife Chris and their children, Adrian and Erin.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the First Baptist Church of Amarillo, 1208 S. Tyler St., Amarillo, TX 79101.
