Obituary for Mary Jo Hales

Mary Jo Hales, 95, of Canyon, passed away on Saturday, December 23, 2023. Services will at 1:30 P.M. on Saturday, December 30, 2023 at the University Church of Christ with Bob Shepard and David Lough officiating. Burial will be in Dreamland Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7:30 P.M. on Friday, December 29, 2023 at Brooks Chapel.

Mary Jo was born on March 19, 1928 in Lockney, Texas to Floyd and Ora Bea (Golden) Tomlinson. She graduated from West Texas High School and received her Bachelor of Arts degree from West Texas Normal College. She married Richmond Hales on August 18, 1950, and they celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary before he preceded her in death on September 2, 2019.

Mary Jo was not only an exceptional homemaker, but she also worked diligently alongside Richmond in the cattle business, helping wherever she was needed as well as taking care of her family. She loved and taught all kinds of art, including tole painting, decoupage, and oil painting. She spent many years attending stock shows, fairs, and sporting events to support her children and was an excellent cook, specializing in mouth watering hot rolls. Mary Jo always took great pride in her home and her family. She and Richmond enjoyed time at their cabin near Ruidoso by Alto, NM.

Mary Jo was the oldest tenured member of the University Church of Christ where she was greatly involved in the Ladies Bible Class for many years. She was also a longtime member of the University Study Club, particularly enjoying her work with the annual Home Tour.

Mary Jo is also preceded in death by her daughter, Rhonda Jo Weatherly, a granddaughter, Kandice Weatherly, sister and brother-in-law, Norma Jean and Kenneth Williams, and brother-in-law, Bob Law.

Survivors include two sons, Rick Hales and wife, Stephanie of Canyon and Rodney Hales and wife, Swany of Nazareth; five grandchildren, Chance and Cade Hales, Katrina Lopez and husband, Isaac, Kristin Paxton and husband, Chris, and Reece Hales and wife, Kaeli Jo; four great grandchildren, Jaydan and Aria Lopez and Regan and Kamryn Hales; sister, Nancy Law of Canyon; son-in-law, Steve Weatherly of Amarillo; and many nieces and nephews.
