Obituary for MARY CAROLYN BLACK HINDERS

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Friday, June 10, 2016 at First Christian Church with Rev. Debra Huffman, officiating. Private burial will follow. Carolyn was born September 20, 1926 to Mr. and Mrs. W.C. Black in Canyon. She was the middle child and only daughter born to the couple. Carolyn's family were amongst some of the founding fathers of the city of Canyon and Randall County. She was part of the fifth generation of her family to attend First Christian Church of Canyon. She was proud of her Canyon roots and graduated from Canyon High School in 1943. In a time where it was not as common for women to attend college, Carolyn attended both West Texas State University and Texas Christian University in Fort Worth where she studied accounting and statistics. She graduated summa cum laude from T.C.U. in 1946. Education was very important to Carolyn. She was proud that all her children attended and graduated from college. On September 27, 1947, Carolyn married her high school sweetheart, Louis G. Hinders, in an impressive candlelight service. At that time, you had to be 21 to marry without your parents' signatures, and Carolyn could, but Louis had to have parental permission as he would not be 21 until February. They enjoyed 68 blessed years together as husband and wife and raised four children while running a successful business. Carolyn and Louis owned and operated a dairy southeast of Canyon. Carolyn was in charge of the accounting and registration of their holstein herd. Her family fondly remembers how she could recognize a cow across the pasture and tell you their number and lineage by memory. In addition, Carolyn volunteered with several organizations including Girl Scouts of America, Palo Duro Canyon Visitors' Center, Randall County 4-H, Palo Duro Retirement Village, and Canyon Cares. She was also an exceptional bridge player and hosted many events at her home until the last several months. Carolyn taught many newcomers the fine art of bridge. Carolyn was the ultimate hostess. She welcomed many foreign agriculture exchange students into her home throughout her lifetime and maintained contact with many over the years. She was preceded in death by her brother, Bob, and her grandson, Chris. Carolyn is survived by her husband, Louis; children, Edward Hinders, Mike Hinders and wife, Donna, Sharon Hinders, and David Hinders and wife, Tami; three grandchildren, Gail Smith and husband, Bradley, Bert Hinders and wife, Mindy, and Calli Farmer and husband, Danny; four great-grandchildren, Hollie, Dustin, Taylor, Eli, and one on the way; and a brother, Bradford Black and wife, Inge. The family would like to thank BSA Hospice of the Southwest and Hudson House for the exceptional care that Carolyn received. Memorials should be directed to First Christian Church, 2011 4th Ave., Canyon, TX 79015 or to Canyon Cares, 1719 5th Ave, Canyon, TX 79015.
