Obituary for Mary Elizabeth 'Beth' Batenhorst

Mary Elizabeth ‘Beth’ Batenhorst, 66, of Canyon, passed away on Saturday, September 30, 2023.
Services will be at 10:00 A.M. on Friday, October 6, 2023 at Brooks Chapel in Canyon. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Umbarger.

Beth was born on March 5, 1957 in Hale County to Alton and Helen (Diuguid) Wyly. She received her Bachelor of Science in Agriculture Business and Economics degree from West Texas State University in May of 1987. She married Paul Batenhorst in Vega on September 6, 1980.

Beth worked for the Social Security Administration for two years before beginning her career with Farmers Home Administration in May of 1978. She worked in the Amarillo County and District Offices until 1983 when she began reporting out of the State Office in Temple as a Program Review Assistant. In late 1984, Beth returned to the Amarillo County Office as Assistant County Supervisor. She worked in the Hereford office from 1986 to 1988, when she was promoted to County Supervisor in Wellington. There, she received the Assistant County Supervisor Employee of the Year for the State of Texas in 1987. For forty years, Beth worked diligently in every position she held.

Beth loved buying and planting flowers and enjoyed shopping immensely. She and Paul spent many hours supporting WT sporting events over the years and cultivated many lasting friendships with the athletes.
Beth was preceded in death by her grandparents and parents.

Survivors include her husband of 43 years, Paul Batenhorst, of Canyon; two sisters, Lauri of Hereford and Teresa of Vega; two nephews and one niece.

The family suggests memorials be to the Department of Agricultural Sciences at West Texas A&M University, PO Box 60998, Canyon, TX 79016.
