Obituary for Mary Berry

Mary Ann Berry, 84, went home to her Lord, August 13, 2018 at BSA Hospice of the Southwest. Memorial services will be 2:00 P.M. Thursday, August 30, 2018 at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Rick Enns, pastor, officiating. Arrangements are by Brooks Funeral Directors. She was a life-long resident of Canyon. The daughter of Roy Virgil and Leola Dawdy. Mary went to and graduated from West Texas High School and West Texas State, where she was a lifetime member of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority. She was the 1965 Girl of the Year and crowned the sweetheart at the annual dance. She married Billie Jack Berry, July 13, 1957 in Canyon and continued her education to eventually become a teacher with the Canyon Independent School District. She began teaching physical education and retired in 1995 as librarian. During her career she shaped and inspired many students into the successful individuals they are today. She loved her “kids.” As a teacher she always made sure that the “little guy” had his or her success. She was an inspiration to us all. A brilliant individual. She also loved the solitude of Palo Duro Canyon, where she enjoyed hunting for artifacts, having picnics, and relaxing in the peacefulness that the Canyon offered. She always enjoyed visiting with friends and family – we will miss her smile and sense of humor and her love of music. Especially, the Willie Nelson genre. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her brother, Richard “Dick” Dawdy, and her sister, Carrie Marie “BoBo” Walters. She is survived by her daughter, Chris Berry of Canyon; her son, Elliot Berry and wife, Jamie of Fritch; her sister, Bennie Jean Airhart of Amarillo; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family suggests memorials be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 110 Mesa Park Dr., Ste. 250, El Paso, TX 79912.
