Obituary for Marvin Brister Cornette

Marvin Brister Cornette, born January 8, 1932, in Bowling Green, Kentucky, was the oldest son of James Percival and Mary Elizabeth Lawson Cornette. He was soon joined by his brothers, James Lawson and William Richard. His father shared his love of hunting and fishing with Marvin, and Marvin always had a good hunting dog for a companion. The family moved to Waco in 1945 when Marvin was in junior high school and then to Canyon, Texas, in 1948. During his two years at Canyon High School, Marvin developed a passion for agriculture that lasted the rest of his life.

Marvin met Wilma Lee Sheets when he went to the Canyon drugstore to get ice cream. He began dating her when she decided to move from being the telegraph operator at the drugstore to a teller at the bank, and he could no longer count on seeing her during his drugstore trips. Marvin married Wilma on May 29, 1952, and they started the marriage and partnership that lasted for the over 70 years remaining in his life. They moved to Huntsville, Texas, where Marvin completed his education at Sam Houston State College, achieving a Master’s degree in Agriculture Education. Upon graduation, Marvin taught agriculture in Miami and Wheeler before joining Celanese Chemical Corporation in April 1956.

Shortly after joining Celanese, Marvin and Wilma moved to White Deer where they raised their three children: Linda Jean, Marvin Clifford, and Connie Lee. Marvin was a dedicated family man. He and Wilma would often go on drives or play golf after dinner. Marvin frequently went hunting and fishing with his father, brothers, and son. He explored common interests, including basketball, tennis, and golf, with each child. During summer vacations, the family camped and fished along the Conejos River in Colorado.

Upon retiring from Celanese in April 1989, Marvin and Wilma returned to Canyon. They were active in the United Methodist Church. As avid supporters of West Texas State University, they established a scholarship, enjoyed a variety of sporting events, and became members of the Old Main Society. They also traveled to the places they wanted to see. Of course, if any relative was involved in sports, from baseball to soccer, they made an effort to attend some of the games. Marvin also returned to his passion for agriculture. He partnered with good men to work his land and began running a cow-calf operation. Yet, his most cherished memories were of time spent with his children and then his grandchildren, often at the old house on one of the farms - riding the horse, hitting golf balls, and enjoying the land.

On October 1, 2022, Marvin B. Cornette died peacefully in his home with his wife Wilma by his side. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother William. Survivors include his wife Wilma, brother James, daughters Linda J. Young and Connie C. Seiden, son Clifford Cornette, son-in-law Greg Seiden, grandchildren John Young (wife Anny Young and children Alejandra, Kyara, and Kyle); Shamar Young (wife Tina Sanghvi and children Arya and Maya), RaQwin Young Krizan (husband Michael Krizan), and Zachariah Seiden (wife Bing Cao and children Xander and Lexia).

Graveside services will be held at 2 pm, Saturday, November 12, 2022, at Dreamland Cemetery.
