Obituary for Lynnette "Lynn" Guy

Lynnette “Lynn” Guy, 86, of Canyon, passed away on Saturday, December 5, 2020.

Graveside services will be at 1:00 P.M. on Wednesday, December 9, 2020 at Dreamland Cemetery with Rev. Rick Enns, pastor of First United Methodist Church, officiating. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, December 8 from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at Brooks Chapel.

Lynnette “Lynn” Guy was born on January 2, 1934 in Hays, Kansas to Edith Dixon and Oliver Pearson of McCracken, Kansas. She grew up in McCracken and graduated from high school there. She received a bachelor’s degree in English from Fort Hays State University in Hays. She married Duane F. Guy of Hays on June 5, 1955 in McCracken.

The Guys moved to Canyon, Texas in 1958 after three years of graduate school. Dr. Guy came as an Assistant Professor of History at West Texas A&M University and later became head of the department of history and later also political science, a post he held until his retirement in 1994.

Mrs. Guy was the Assistant Archivist/Librarian at the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum for a number of years. She was librarian at First United Methodist Church in Canyon for 21 years before her retirement in 1997; she initiated a summer reading program for preschool and elementary age children at the church. She also was Church Historian for FUMC and head of the Northwest Texas Conference (United Methodist) Commission on Archives and History for many years. She also did consulting on church libraries throughout the Conference. She was co-editor and principle contributor of A Joyful Journey: A History of First United Methodist Church, Canyon, Texas, 1889-1989 and a contributor to Continuing A Joyful Journey.

She was a long-time member of the American Association of University Women; she was one of the founders of WT Women, an organization for faculty wives, women, and staff at WTAMU. She was a member of the Canyon Fine Arts Club. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Canyon and an active member of United Methodist Women.

Her husband preceded her in death. She leaves one son, Marc and wife Sue of Carrollton and a daughter, Pattie Reeves and husband Ron, and her four joys: grandchildren Jonathan and Jennifer Reeves and Alexa and Aric Guy.
