Obituary for LOUISE CONATSER RUSSELL

Louise (Conatser) Russell, 74, of Canyon, died Friday, September 6, 2002. A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Sunday, September 15, 2002 at the First Christian Church with Debra Huffman, pastor, officiating. Friends are invited to the Fellowship Hall following the service. Mrs. Russell was born near Dalhart on December 18, 1927, to Charles and Susie (Roberts) Conatser. After living near Dumas for a couple of years, the Conatsers moved to Cuba, New Mexico, where they homesteaded a place and built a log cabin to live in. They moved back to Texas to start their girls to school at Pringle. They came to Canyon in 1936. Louise graduated from W. T. High (a part of West Texas State Teachers College) in 1944, along with Ross Russell, whom she would later marry. She graduated from WTSTC in the summer of 1948, having already taught one year at Spearman High School. She graduated with a degree in mathematics and education and a permanent teacher?s certificate. She taught another year at Spearman before marrying Ross L. Russell in 1949. She was a stay-at-home mother to their two sons, but was later employed by WTSTC as Circulation Librarian. The Russells were married on June 5, 1949. As members of First Christian Church, she was an elder, historian, librarian, teacher, and past chairman of the board of directors. She has also represented her church as chairman of the United Church Women of Canyon, as chairman of the United Campus Ministry board, as secretary of the High Plains Area of the Christian Church, as secretary of the Ceta Glen Committee, and as chairman and participating member of the Christian Women?s Fellowship of the High Plains Area. She was also on the original board which instigated the building of Palo Duro Village Retirement Cooperative. Louise has had a special love of the outdoors: gardening, working with cub scouts, and camping with family and Christian groups at Ceta Glen. She especially enjoyed the time she spent learning about Texas wildflowers and keeping the wildflower patch in front of the Panhandle Plains Historical Museum. Survivors include her husband, two sons, Ron, and wife, Geri Russell, of Canyon, and Steve, and wife, Karen Russell, of Riverside, CA; five grandsons, Kyle and Tyson Russell, of Austin, Matt Russell, of Canyon, Charlie Russell, US Navy, Grotom, Conn., and Andy Russell, of Riverside, CA; one granddaughter, Becca Russell, of Riverside, CA; one sister, Catherine Luster, of Wildorado; two brothers, Jack, and wife, Sistie Conatser, of Dallas; and Charles W., and wife, Jo Conatser, of Lubbock; an uncle, Joe, and wife, Flo Roberts, of Ft. Worth, TX; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws. The family suggests memorials be to the First Christian Church, Ceta Glen Christian Conference Center, the Crown of Texas Hospice, or to a favorite charity.
