Obituary for LOREE DOWNING

Loree Downing, 101, of Wichita, Kansas, died December 25, 2001. GRAVESIDE SERVICES will be at 10:00 AM Friday, December 28, 2001 at Dreamland Cemetery with Rev. Kevin Deckard, pastor of Westover Fellowship Church of Amarillo, officiating. VISITATION will be from 6:00 - 8:00 PM Thusday, December 27, 2001 at Brooks Chapel in Canyon, Texas. Loree Downing was born in Aspermont, Texas on December 9, 1900, to Etta Lenora Sullivan Hill and Jessie Alvin Hill. She attended public schools in Aspermont and upon graduation in 1919, attended West Texas State Teachers College in Canyon, Texas, and then taught in Texas Panhandle schools. On June 15, 1924, she married John L. Downing of Canyon. Loree and John farmed in the Canyon area until 1935 when they began homesteading on the San Augustine Plains near Magdalena, NM. During their 51 years of marriage, until John’s death in 1975, they resided in the Socorro and Magdalena area of New Mexico. In 1978, Loree moved to Wichita, Kansas, to be near her daughter, Jon Etta Upshaw. She was preceded in death by a sister, Cayloma Arilla Hill Daniell, a half sister, Delores Tillotson Hurst, and two half brothers, Eugene Randolph Tillotson and Doyle Stratton Tillotson. She was also preceded in death by a son, Allen L. Downing who died soon after his birth in 1926. Loree’s family remembers her for her complete dedication to her husband, John, and to all members of her family. She always placed the needs of her family ahead of her own. Survivors include a daughter, Jon Etta Upshaw, and husband, Charles W., of Wichita, KS; one son, Earl Murphy Downing, and wife, Nancy L., of Las Cruces, NM; six grandchildren, Loretta Gail Upshaw Rombeck, and husband, Mike, of Belle Plaine, KS, Sandra Jane Upshaw, of Houston, TX, Aileen Joyce Upshaw, of Wichita, KS, Janice Lynn Downing Kreher, and husband, Harvey, of Las Cruces, NM, John Scott Downing, and wife, Kathy, of Alamogordo, NM, and Loree Lee Downing, of Las Cruces, NM; and four great grandchildren, Terry and David Rombeck, of Lawrence, KS, and Jeremy and Dustin Kreher, of Las Cruces, NM. The family suggests memorials go to Meals on Wheels, 200 South Walnut Wichita, Kansas 67213.
