Obituary for LOIS E. RICE

Services will be at 10:00 A.M. on Thursday, October 27, 2011 at the First United Methodist Church in Canyon with Rev. Tom Moore, Rev. Rick Enns, and Bob Shepard officiating. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, October 26, 2011 from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at Brooks Chapel. Graveside services will be at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, October 28, 2011 at Forest Grove Cemetery in Telephone, Texas. Lois E. Rice was born on May 6, 1926 in Duncan, Oklahoma to William and Naomi Lee Wilbourn. She was raised and attended school in Plainview. She married Truman Mooney in 1945 and they had one daughter, Phyllis Ann. She moved to Amarillo in 1969 and married Karl Rice. She opened "The Furniture Galleries" in Canyon in 1971 and became Mayor of Canyon by "write in" election in 1990. She served as mayor until 2007. Lois began volunteering for the area in 1971 and became a full time volunteer after selling her business in 1996. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, WTAMU Foundation, United Way Governing Board, Leadership Texas Alumni, Family Support Services Board, Chamber of Commerce, serving two terms as president, University Study Club, Womens Forum, Toastmasters, Canyon Rotary, FEMA Board for the state of Texas, Maverick Boys and Girls Club Board, and was the Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year in 1989. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Karl G. Rice, sister, Edith Clements, brothers, John and Wayne Wilbourn, and her grandson, Micah Theron Shepard. Survivors include her daughter, Phyllis Shepard and husband, Joel, of Telephone, TX; her granddaughter, Liesl Brooke Shepard, of Carrollton; great grandson, Shayler Carlton Shepard, of Decatur; three sisters, Wilmoth Cates, of Plainview, Dorothy Frantz , of Guymon, OK, and Neva Kampfer, and husband,Gary, of Tyler; sister-in-law, Naomi Wilbourn, of Lubbock; nieces, Jacalyn Spain, of Guymon, OK, and Lynn Brown, of Euless, and Kisa Kampfer, of Colorado Springs, CO; nephew, Kirt Kampfer, of Tyler; and stepdaughters, Judy Reiner, of Albuquerque, NM, and Jan Yeager, of Amarillo. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Canyon, Public Library, 1501 3rd Avenue, Canyon, Texas 79015, WTAMU Foundation, PO Box 766, Canyon, Texas 79016, or your favorite local charity.
