Obituary for LILLIE MAE MERCER

Services will be at First United Methodist Church of Canyon at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, February 6, 2006 with Rev. Clark Williams and Rev. Earl Blair, officiating. Graveside services and burial will be at Silverton Cemetery at 2:30 P.M. on Monday. Burial will be at Silverton Cemetery in Silverton, Texas. Lillie was born July 23, 1911 in Childress County, Texas to Jim and Lula Steele. She was the youngest girl in the family of seven children. The Steeles moved to Briscoe County where they farmed. She married Joe B. Mercer in Tulia, Texas at sixteen years of age. They farmed a few years, then moved to Silverton and operated the local drug store and movie theater. At the beginning of WWII, Lillie and Joe began farming again until retirement. They had two children, Thelma Gean and Jim Ed. Lillie was a member of First United Methodist Church of Silverton where she served as chairman of the kitchen for a time. Lillie and Joe were active in Silverton all their lives. They served as Directors at Silverton State Bank and were active supporters for the Republican Party. They enjoyed several years at the races at Ruidoso, NM. Lillie was a strong supporter of her children and grandchildren. She loved to play bridge, to garden and to quilt. She drove to Plainview every week or two to visit her sister, Fannie Francis. They were very close. Her younger brother, J. R. was very special to Lillie also. Lillie moved to Canyon to Palo Duro Retirement Village where she lived until her illness. She loved living there and made many friends. She loved to play bridge there and taught newcomers how to play. Lillie was preceded in death by her husband, Joe, in 1994 and her son, Dr. Jim E. Mercer, of New Braunfels, in 1997. Survivors include, her brother, J. R. Steele and wife, Verba Lee of Plainview, daughter, Thelma Fulton and husband, H. R. of Canyon, five grandchildren, Richard Fulton and wife, Sandy of Tallehassee, FL, Lauran Corson and husband, Bill of Basking Ridge, NJ, Jeanna McIntyre and husband, Patrick of Dallas, Dr. Kent Mercer and wife, Nancy of Houston, and Dr. Jett Mercer and wife, Carolyn of England; and seven great grandchildren, Alex and Julie Corson of New Jersey, Mason, Max and Meredith Mercer of Houston, Christy Mercer of England, and Wren Lee Green, III of Tallehassee, FL.
