Obituary for LEONA HARDMAN BUCHANAN DOWNING

Leona Hardman Buchanan Downing, 91, of Canyon, died Friday, February 1, 2008 at Palo Duro Retirement Village. Leona was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend to many. She will be missed greatly by her family and friends. Mrs. Downing was born February 6, 1916, in Grandfield, Oklahoma to George and Mittie Smith Hardman. She moved to Canyon in 1923 and lived in Canyon and Amarillo for the rest of her life. She graduated from Canyon High School in 1935. She married her high school sweetheart, Lloyd Buchanan, on June 5, 1937. They had three children. He preceded her in death in 1975. She married Jack Downing of Canyon on August 29, 1992. He preceded her in death in 2000. Her son, Bruce Buchanan of Amarillo, died in 1997. She was also preceded in death by her parents and her brother, M.A. (Tin) and Eugene Hardman, as well as her sisters Bulla McCormick, Eula Donnell, Helen Salyer, and Geneva Hardman. Mrs. Downing was a successful business woman for many years. She owned and operated Leona"s Beauty Bar in Canyon for 23 years. She was a long time member of the First Baptist Church in Canyon, where she served faithfully in many capacities. After she sold her business in 1978, she volunteered her time at the Canyon Senior Citizens until recently. The family wishes to thank all the friends who supported us with their prayers and food during Leona"s illness. We especially thank the thoughtful residents and staff of Palo Duro Retirement Village and the First Baptist Church in Canyon along with many other friends in the area. The family wants to give a special thanks to Leona"s dear friend and fellow greeter at the First Baptist Church, Maudie Laycock, who visited her daily throughout her illness. Thank you to the nurses and other caregivers of Hospice Care of the Southwest, especially Tana Kohout and Sherry Hearn who provided so much loving care and spiritual support to Leona and the entire family during her last days. Survivors include a son, Charles Buchanan and wife, Mary, of Hot Springs Village, Arkansas; a daughter Gloria Thomas and husband, Charlie, of Austin, Texas; a daughter-in-law, Twylla Buchanan of Amarillo; step-daughter, Gail Field and husband, Rusty, of Amarillo; a step-son, Scott Downing and wife, Diane of Commerce, Texas; grandchildren, Valerie Cadenhead and husband, Jimmy, of Cordova, Tennessee, Steve Buchanan and wife, Stephanie, of Roy, Utah, Danny Buchanan and wife, Kim, of Lawrenceville, Georgia, Tony Thomas, of Austin, Texas, Ty and Tac Buchanan, of Amarillo, Alison Ricketts and husband, Zane, of Canyon, Rene Ferrell and husband, Shane, of Amarillo, Paige Bussell and husband, Mark, of Commerce, Texas, and Laine Downing, of Austin, Texas; great grandchildren, Trae Cadenhead and wife, Tiffany of Memphis, Tennessee, Tyson, Taysha, and Tori Cadenhead of Cordova, Tennessee, Maeve and Nathaniel Buchanan, of Roy, Utah, Amanda Buchanan, of Lawrenceville, Georgia, Colton and Nikita Buchanan, of Amarillo, and Tayna Bussell, of Commerce, Texas; and one great-great grandson, Ian Cadenhead, of Memphis, Tennessee. The family suggests memorials be given to Gideons International Memorial Bible Fund, the Building Fund of the First Baptist Church of Canyon, or a favorite charity.
