LaVerna Marlue Bass, 86, of Canyon died Wednesday, March 18, 2020.

Private family graveside services will be at Dreamland Cemetery.

Verna was born May 18, 1933, in Wolf Bayou, Ark., to Robert David Hester and Addie Savada Smith Hester. She was one of five children, Robert, Melvin, Alvin, Dulon and Wilma "Mickey." Her family moved from Arkansas to Arizona when she was 12, pulling a homemade trailer that they slept in throughout the journey.

Verna married Richard Eugene "Gene" Bass on Oct. 4, 1953, in Marana, Ariz. She moved with her husband, who was in the military, to Florida. When Gene was discharged, they moved to Illinois, where Gene completed school at the University of Illinois. The pair moved with their children in 1974 to Canyon, where Verna worked for the Mother's Day Out nursery program at First United Methodist Church.

The couple moved to Denver, where Gene retired. Shortly after, they moved back to Canyon to be near their children and grandchildren. Retirement for Gene and Verna included her painting the carousel horses her husband carved, as well as riding many carousels. Verna was glad her children were not around when they rode carousels to avoid listening to her children's embarrassment.

Verna and Gene also enjoyed drinking coffee, visiting with family and friends, and traveling in their camper.

Preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and her siblings, Melvin, Alvin and Mickey.

Survivors include seven children, Linda Cogliandro of Muleshoe, Janice Ithaca and husband Jerry of Canyon, David Bass and wife Brenda of Richmond, Steve Bass and wife Terri of Canyon, Terry Brock and husband Phil of Canyon, Larry Bass and wife Kathy of Idalou, and Roger Bass and wife Cheryl of Forney; 17 grandchildren, Janice Vu, Ricky Cogliandro, Tony Ithaca, Jared Ithaca, Cassie Sanders, Jennifer Mabry, Laura Cogliandro, Sarah Bass, Chase Brock, Nicole Bass, Britni Newell, Jacob Bass, Tessa Bass, Jordan Bass, Miranda Ithaca, Dominick Bass and Noah Ragle; and 6 great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials be to drink a cup of coffee in her honor.
