Juanita “Nita” Wooten was born on March 2, 1929 in Floyd County, Texas to John and Lola Cross Bell. The youngest of three children, Nita grew up on a farm near Petersburg where she enjoyed learning to read at an early age. She graduated valedictorian from Petersburg High School at the age of 16.

Upon graduation, Nita moved to Canyon, Texas to attend West Texas State College, graduating with a degree in English. She was a homemaker for 24 years raising her three children, before taking a secretarial position at West Texas State University department of music in 1973. In 1994, Nita retired as secretary to the dean of the College of Fine Arts and Humanities to care for her mother, and then later returned to work on a part-time basis.

Nita filled many rolls throughout her life including wife, mother, Cub Scout Den Mother, seamstress, Bible school teacher, Auxiliary and nursing home volunteer. She believed in daily exercise and walks to stay healthy and independent. She once said, “I want to meet each day with courage, contentment and joy.” She did just that.

Nita was a dedicated member of the Sixth Avenue Church of Christ and attended the Ladies Bible Class at the University Church of Christ. Her love of God was evident in her daily living, beginning each day studying the Word and in prayer. Nita was an encourager, showering her family, church family and friends with prayer, cards, and well wishes.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her sister and brother-in-law, Louise and R.B. Allen, and her brother and sister-in-law, John and Dorothy Bell.

She is survived by her children, Larry Wooten and wife, Brenda of Oklahoma City, OK, Shayne Lane and husband, Gary of Amarillo, TX, and Tara Walker and husband, John of Plainview, TX; her grandchildren, Bryan Wooten and wife, Audra of San Antonio, TX, Sarah Harjo of Yukon, OK, Matt White of Montgomery, TX, Kayla Voss and husband, Dax of Lubbock, TX, and Jana Guberud and husband, Brian of Arvada, CO; and eleven great grandchildren, Hope, Katherine, Laura and Robbie Wooten of San Antonio, Jibril and Ilyas Harjo of Yukon, Allie, Vanden, and Vaughn Voss of Lubbock, and Mason and Owen Guberud of Arvada.

The family would like to thank Shayne for her love and compassion seeing to Mom’s needs. She was always a phone call away. What a blessing to know Mom was in good hands.
