Obituary for Joy Kirk Holmes
Eureka Joy Kirk Holmes, 92, of Canyon, TX passed away on Friday, October 28, 2022. Graveside services will be held at 4:00 P.M. on Wednesday, November 2, 2022 at Dreamland Cemetery in Canyon. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 6:00 P.M. on Tuesday, November 1, 2022 at Brooks Chapel in Canyon.
Joy was born on July 10, 1930 in Silverton, TX to William Archie and Lucie (McGavock) Kirk. She was the oldest of four children and had three younger brothers. She graduated from Floydada High School in 1947.
As a young adult, Joy worked for the QA&P Railroad. As an industrious young mother and farm wife, she could operate most of the farm equipment, did all the bookkeeping for the farm, sewed most of the clothes for her seven children, and raised and canned most of the family’s food from a garden. She later became a bookkeeper and office manager in the cattle industry.
Joy married Clarence Dean Holmes in 1989 in Amarillo. She and Clarence made a good team working on rent houses while also allowing time for numerous trips to Canada, Europe, and across the United States. They also enjoyed camping and 20+ annual trips to the Red River Family Encampment.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Dean Holmes in 2021.
Survivors include five daughters, Donna Couper and husband, Fred of West Hartford, CT, Karla Rutherford and husband, Fred of Ft. Worth, TX, Cheryl Holmes and husband, Mike of League City, TX, Terri Giddens and husband, Ted of Canyon, TX, and Karen Wyly and husband, Criss of Friona, TX; two sons, Kent Patterson and wife, Brenda of Canyon, TX and Bruce Patterson and wife, Carol of Wichita Falls, TX; three brothers, Don Kirk and wife, Nelda of Sunnyvale, TX, Weldon Kirk and wife, Carol of Waterford, MI, and True Kirk and wife, Margorie of Durango, CO; 21 grandchildren; and 39 great grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials be made to the New Mexico Christian Children’s Home, 1356 NM 236, Portales, NM 88130.
