Obituary for JOHN D. TAYLOR

Services will be 3:00 PM Saturday, February 9, 2008 at the First Baptist Church in Canyon with Dr. Howard K. Batson, pastor of First Baptist Church in Amarillo, officiating. Burial will be in Dreamland Cemetery. John was born on May 4, 1926 to John D. and Pearl Crawford Taylor, Sr. in Hatfield, AR. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific. Following the war he attended and received his Masters degree in Agriculture from the University of Arkansas. He married Jo Ann Dover on June 2, 1949. As a teacher he taught agriculture for 17 years in Hatfield, AR and 24 years in Lincoln, CA. During the summers, he enjoyed helping the FFA students prepare for the livestock shows. He also served as a Judge for the livestock competitions at the County Fairs. He enjoyed raising cattle, gardening, and growing fruit trees. He served as a Deacon for many years and as a member of the First Baptist Church in Canyon, where he often taught adult Sunday School classes. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Virginia, two brothers, one sister, and his parents. Survivors include his wife, Jo Ann; daughter, Carolyn; sons, Jeffrey, Jerry Don and wife, Ruth Ann and their three children, Zack, Cassie, and Jessica; grandson, Andrew Whaples and wife, Kristy; sisters, Ruth Hays, and Opal Smith. The family suggests memorials be to the Missions Ministry at First Baptist Church, 1717 4th Avenue, Canyon, TX 79015 or Habitat for Humanity, 2700 S. Wilson St., Amarillo, TX 79103.
