Obituary for Joe Hawkins

Joe Hawkins, 91, of Granbury, formerly of Canyon and Amarillo passed away on Monday, September 19, 2022. Services will be 10:30 A.M. Saturday, September 24 at Brooks Chapel with Chaplain Lane Boyd, officiating. Burial will follow at Kress Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday, September 23 from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. at Brooks Chapel.

Joe Hawk was born on May 9, 1931 in Plainview, Texas to Bill and Annie Hawkins. His school years were spent in Plainview.

Joe Hawk married the love of his life, Dorothy Thompson, in December of 1951. They moved to Canyon where they started their family. They attended the First United Methodist Church in Canyon. Joe Hawk was a lineman for South Western Public Service where he retired from after 45 years of service. Hawk was also a member of the Canyon Fire Department. He is listed on the Texas Historical Marker Dedication on October 17, 2009 at the Canyon Fire Department.

He liked to tinker with old cars and guns in his early years and he loved snow skiing and water skiing.
Some of his fondest memories included his time spent at family reunions, family vacations and family Christmases with his wife, kids, and grandkids. They enjoyed camping at Palo Duro Canyon in their motorhome. One of the most cherished memories was driving the motorhome around Amarillo at Christmas time viewing Christmas lights, the small grandkids expressed their enthusiasm saying “pretty, pretty, pretty,” while everyone joined in singing Christmas carols.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy, his parents, Bill and Annie Hawkins, his brothers and sisters-in-law, L.D. and Francis Hawkins and Earnest and Pat Hawkins, his sister and brother-in-law, Viola and John Carr, niece, Virginia Fore, and baby Sara Bell and baby George.

Survivors include his children, Kay Meador and husband Jerry, Kelly Griffin and husband Paul, and Chad Hawkins and wife Beverly; grandchildren, Jason and wife Wendy, Tori and husband Santiago, Kira and husband Clay, Breanna and husband Randy, Brittney and husband Dylan, Paige, and Seth and wife Brittanie; seventeen great grandchildren; and one great, great grandchild.

A special thank you to Nohemi Hernandez and her family for all of the love, care, and support they have given to our Dad, Mom, Grandmother, and Aunt Karen.
