Jimmy Lee McBroom, 69, of Canyon, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Sunday, February 23, 2020 in BSA Hospital.

Memorial services are planned for 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, March 7, 2020 at Brooks Chapel with Rev. Rick Enns, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, officiating.

Jim was born into a family that were some of the original farmers and ranchers in the Texas Panhandle. He was the son of Johnnie and Nettie McBroom and was born at Neblett Hospital in Canyon on December 4, 1950. He grew up in Canyon and graduated from Canyon High School in 1969. While in high school he actively participated in athletics and was an Eagle Scout. He attended and graduated from West Texas A&M University in 1975 with a Bachelor of Science degree and teaching certificate. During his years as a student at West Texas A&M he was an active member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity and ROTC. In 1990, he completed his Master of Arts degree in Business Administration and a received Mid-Management Certification in Education at Texas A&M University, Kingsville.

Following graduation from college, Jim initiated a 28-year career as an educator. His coaching and teaching assignments kept him in the South Texas region. His love was working with the youth in communities through coaching athletics and teaching American History. He cherished the nickname “COACH,” and this revered title was used by his students while he was actively teaching and later by his friends at Conner Place. He also worked with the Methodist Youth Ministry in every community where he coached.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents. He is survived by his brother, Mike McBroom and wife Joyce; sister, Judy Hobbs and husband Bobby; niece, Caley McBroom Bradicich; four nephews, Michael and Ethan McBroom and Jeff and Ian Hobbs; ten great nieces; eleven great nephews; one great, great nephew; and many cousins.

A memorial scholarship will be set up in Jim’s name through the Education Department at West Texas A&M University.

A very special thanks to the staff and extended family at Conner Place for making everyday a happy one for our beloved “COACH.”
