Obituary for JEWEL HINSON FOEHSER

The family will receive friends on Thursday, September 22 from 4:00 to 6:00 P.M. at Brooks Chapel in Canyon. Services will be at 10:00 A.M. on Friday, September 23, 2016 at Washington Avenue Christian Church with Jim Shelburne, pastor, officiating. Graveside services will be at 4:00 P.M. on Friday at Lamesa Memorial Park Cemetery in Lamesa. Jewel Maurice Hinson was born in Lamesa, Texas on May 31, 1924 to Jim and Hester Gibson Hinson. She grew up on the family farm with her parents and older brother, James. They were surrounded by cousins ane she spent most of her childhood being a tomboy. She attended Mullins School in the country and skipped 2 grades so she was in the same grade as her brother. Jewel was a member of the Midway Baptist Church. She accepted Jesus and was baptized at the age of 12. Jewel graduated from Lamesa High School in 1940 right before her 16th birthday. She married Charles Harvard Roberts August 1, 1942. They moved to the farm at Midway. They had 2 daughters, Vicky and Kathy. In 1963, Jewel married Dixie Maltsberger, a widower with 3 children. She became mother to Alana, Dean, and Laurie. They relocated to Mineola, TX and lived upstairs at the English Funeral Home. Jewel was an excellent seamstress and she made Alana’s prom and wedding dresses. In 1972 Jewel moved to Amarillo with her mother. She attended Draughons Business College. She went to work for Cloth World in 1973 and became supervisor of accounts payable. In 1975 she joined Beta Sigma Phi. She loved to travel and she learned to square dance. In 1984 she moved to St Louis, MO when the Cloth World headquarters was relocated, She bought a house there. She was honored as the Cloth World Wonder World of People Award Hall of Fame. She continued to square dance and she met Dick Foehser at a square dance convention in Amarillo. They were married in 1989. She retired from Cloth World on her 65th birthday. They sold her house in St. Louis and moved to his house in Granbury, TX. He was a carpenter and he added an addition on to the house. It became the family gathering place for some of his 8 children and their families. In 2006 Jewel sold the house and moved back to Amarillo to be near her daughters. She moved into a townhouse in 2007. Jewel was honored with a party on her 90th birthday. To celebrate, she bought herself a new car. She continued to live independently and drive until her death at the age of 92. She had many friends everywhere she lived. She was actively involved with church, with community associations, with work bowling leagues, with square dance clubs, and with family. She could always be counted on to take an office or do a job. She never said no or I quit. Every holiday was celebrated with a family gathering and a lot of homemade ice cream. She loved to visit and there would be a meal and a lot of games. She loved to play 42, Rumicub, Crazy Bridge, Hand & Foot, Pinochle, etc. She was a competitive player and most often won. She was proficient on her computer and made the birthday cards she sent. At 92 she could still remember telephone numbers. She is survived by her daughters, Vicky Sexton and husband Larry and Kathy Sheppard and husband, Joe, 5 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, 2 soon to be great great granddaughters, and all of her extended families that loved her and called her mother, grandmother and Nana.
