Jerry was born on May 28, 1932 in Hedley, Texas to Wesley and Ruby O’Hare Banister. She graduated from Plainview High School and then attended West Texas State College, where she received a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree.

On November 23, 1950, she married Bennie Woods in Canyon. They were the first couple to be married at the J.A. Hill Chapel. He preceded her in death on March 23, 2006. They spent 56 wonderful years together and one of the things they thoroughly enjoyed doing with one another was woodworking.

Jerry was a teacher for the Canyon Independent School District for 29 years. She was also the highest paid volunteer at the First United Methodist Church up until her retirement in 2017. She was the most devoted member and knew each person that came in the door of the church. She truly had a gift for hospitality.

She was a member of the Crusaders Sunday School Class and a board member at Palo Duro Retirement Village. Jerry loved sports. She especially loved attending the WT women’s basketball games.

She will be greatly missed by her family, church family, and students.

Survivors include her daughter, Sandra Brown and husband Donnie, of Amarillo; son, Randy Woods and wife Carolyn, of Baton Rouge, LA; two granddaughters, Brianna Smith and husband David, of Fritch and Mallory Coughlan and husband Daniel, of Prosper; two grandsons, Wesley Brown and wife Tiffany, of Amarillo and Chas Woods, of Tulsa, OK; six great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; a special niece, Vicki Summers, of Rowlett; and 29 years of kids who had her as a math and P.E. teacher.

The family suggests that memorials be made to the First United Methodist Church, 1818 4th Ave, Canyon, TX 79015.
