Obituary for JANE WALKER COMPTON

The family will receive visitors at the First Presbyterian Church of Canyon on Friday, December 16, 2016 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Jane Walker Compton (1930-2016) died on December 9, 2016 at home. She was born in Brenham, Texas, the only child of Edna Allen Walker and Thomas Prince Walker. She graduated from North Texas State College with a degree in Biology. There she met William David Compton and they married just after graduation in 1950. While David got his Ph.D. at The University of Texas, she worked as a medical technologist at the old Brackenridge Hospital in Austin. She later returned to med tech work when her children were in high school and college. A personal milestone for her was attaining 50 years of continuous certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology. One of Jane’s favorite times in her life was the year the family lived in England during David’s sabbatical from 1971-72. She indulged her love of history, literature, art, music, and architecture, visiting historic sites and museums there, making the most of many such opportunities. She was an enthusiastic attendee at symphony and opera performances all her life, and during the family's years in Houston, Jane raised money for the Houston Grand Opera as a volunteer. Jane was an expert seamstress, making beautiful outfits from designer patterns using the finest fabrics, adding special touches that made the clothes stand out above the ordinary. Over the years she also enjoyed knitting, Irish crochet, needlepoint, rug making, cross-stitch, and other arts and crafts projects. She always felt that education was important for everyone. She loved to read, loved words and word play, and always wanted to "learn something new every day." Wherever she lived she was a member of and active in Friends of the Library groups, including Canyon where she enjoyed volunteering for many years. She always sought out opportunities to enlarge her world intellectually and culturally and encouraged others to do the same. Jane was a positive person and many friends remember her cheerful nature and beautiful smile. Before she became too ill to participate, she was an active member of the Amarillo branch of AAUW and enjoyed their outings around the Panhandle. Jane was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church (USA). Her family wishes to express their thanks to the nurses of Compassion Home Care, especially nurse Kristin, and to BSA Hospice of the Southwest and its nurses and volunteers. Jane is survived by her husband, David, their children Sarah (Jimmy), David (Windi), and Margaret; granddaughter Elizabeth, and two great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that anyone desiring to remember Jane make a donation to the Canyon Public Library, 1501 3rd Ave., Canyon, TX 79015, St. Jude Children's Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105, Shriners Children's Hospital, P.O. Box 328, Amarillo, TX 79105 or Habitat for Humanity, P.O. Box 775, Amarillo, TX 79105, all causes she truly cared about.
